How to Tie The Batman Redfish Fly Pattern

The Batman Fly is an easy pattern to tie and works well when targeting tailing Redfish in a variety of scenarios. This fly has great movement in the water and works well for cruising fish or tailing fish. Plus, if you see a Black Drum or a Sheepshead while searching for Redfish, this is a great pattern to throw at them, too. Materials:

• Gamakatsu B10S - Size #1
• UNI Waxed Thread - 6/0, Black
• Hareline Black Painted Lead Dumbbell Eyes - Large
• Hareline Krystal Flash - Black
• Hareline Arctic Fox Zonker - Black
• Hareline Zonker Cut Rabbit Hide - Black
• Spirit River Estaz Chenille - Regular, Black
• RIO Hard Mono Saltwater Tippet - 30lb

Step One:

Start your thread and tie in the Dumbbell Eyes just in front of the bend of the hook. Anchor the eyes using figure-8 wraps and add some superglue for increased durability.

Step Two:

Grab 4-5 pieces of Krystal Flash, double them over, and tie them in just behind the Dumbbell Eyes. Take a few wraps with your thread to anchor the Flash then trim the Flash so it's 2x the length of the hook shank.

Step Three:

Cut a small piece of the Arctic Fox Zonker and tie it in just behind the Dumbbell Eyes. Strip out the short fibers and tie the fox in so it's distributed evenly around the hook shank.

Step Four:

Next, tie in the Estaz. Make sure you choose a piece that's long enough to wrap all the way up to the eye of the hook. Tie it in on top of the fox and just behind the Dumbbell Eyes. After tying it in, advance your thread to right in front of the eyes.

Step Five:

Cut two relatively short pieces of Rabbit Zonker to use as claws. These strips should be roughly 1-inch in length. Tie the zonker strips in above the eyes with the leather facing out. Position the zonker strips so there's one on each side of the hook shank. After you're done tying them in, advance your thread all the way up to the eye of the hook.

Step Six:

Wrap your Estaz through the body of the fly taking touching turns. Wrap the Estaz around the eyes and use the wraps to push the zonker strips backward. Continue wrapping up to the eye of the hook and tie off the Estaz with your thread. Trim the excess Estaz.

Step Seven:

Finally, tie in your weed guard. Take your hard mono and double it over. Place the folded mono on the underside of the hook shank just behind the hook eye and wrap it in with your thread. After you've tied your weed guard in, whip finish.

Step Eight:

Add some UV epoxy to secure the weed guard in place. Place some epoxy on both sides of the hook shank and use your UV light to cure the weed guard where you want it.

Step Nine:

Trim the weed guard so it extends slightly past the hook point.

Step Ten:

And that's the Batman Redfish Crab. This is a great pattern for dark days when Redfish are feeding on the bottom and can be used to target a variety of other species as well.
