How to Tie a BWO Soft Hackle Wet Fly

The BWO Soft Hackle fly is a great wet fly to swing through riffles and runs. Trout key in on emerging BWOs during a hatch and take advantage of insects as they swim up through the water column to hatch. This fly is relatively easy to tie and is tied on a strong hook. Swing this fly on a single-handed fly rod or a two-handed Trout Spey rod for maximum success. This can also be used as a dropper off of a dry fly in shallow water. Materials:

• Tiemco TMC 3769 Wet Fly Hook - Size 16
• UNI Waxed Thread - Olive
• Hareline Turkey Biot Quills - Olive
• Hare's Ear Plus Dubbin - Light Olive
• Hareline Hungarian Partridge Skin

Step One:

Start your thread and tie in a single Turkey Biot Quill at the bend of the fly. Tie the Quill in with the notch down to create a ribbed body. Tie the Quill in at the tip and wrap rearward slightly then advance your thread to slightly behind the hook eye. Wrap the Quill up the hook shank taking touching turns to create the body of the fly. Tie the Quill off leaving some room for a thorax and trim any excess materials.

Step Two:

Create a small dubbing noodle on your thread and wrap the noodle around the hook shank to create a dubbing ball thorax. This will also help splay the Partridge Hackle when you tie that in.

Step Three:

Tie in the Partridge Hackle right behind the eye of the hook. Stroke the fibers back, trim the tip of the feather to create a delta, and tie it in with several thread wraps.

Step Four:

Wrap the Hackle around the hook shank twice, tie it off, trim any excess materials, then whip finish. And that's it! This is a great little pattern, really easy to tie, and hugely productive when fished in the right scenario.
