Tibor Signature 7/8 Fly Reel

The Tibor Signature 7/8 Fly Reel is the eight-weight workhorse of a series Tibor machines and assembles in Delray Beach, Florida, built for fish that get to your backing on the first run. Tibor rates it for 7 and 8 weight rods and lists bonefish, permit, tarpon, snook, redfish, striped bass, salmon, pike, albacore and freshwater bass as its target species. That is the honest range for a reel that weighs 8.5 ounces and still carries 200 yards of 20 pound Micron under a full eight-weight line: a flats, beach and jetty reel that a striper or salmon angler can borrow without apology.

Design

The frame measures 3.75 inches by 1.5 inches. Spool and frame are both completely ventilated, which sheds heat during long runs and gives the reel its carrying incoming and outgoing click. The QuickChange spool system involves only a single moving part, so spools come off and go back on quickly. A mechanical clutch handles retrieve conversion: reverse the clutch dogs and the reel changes hands, and reels ship right hand retrieve unless you specify otherwise. The incoming signal is made by the clutch dogs contacting the drag plate and is permanent; the outgoing signal comes from three clicker pins on the drag plate and can be silenced by pulling those pins. Every reel is serialized under the nameplate beside the reel stand, and Tibor engraves that nameplate free on new Signature reels.

Finish

Anodized aluminum in Tibor's published Signature palette of Frost Silver, Frost Black, Satin Gold, Jet Black, Royal Blue, Crimson, Aqua and Graphite Gray, with the hub and other small parts available in contrasting colors. Anodizing is what makes the reel viable in salt, and it is also why Tibor will not refinish a reel: the process takes material away, so the scratches a reel earns on a poling platform stay with it. Rinse in fresh warm water after every use, and after heavy saltwater exposure strip the line and backing off and wipe the spool down to get the salt out.

Materials

Machined from solid bar stock aluminum rather than cast, which is how a frame this light takes drag pressure without flexing. The design runs on very few parts, and the whole reel opens for cleaning with nothing more specialized than a penny. The handle is Delrin, chosen for positive gripping and quick release.

Drag

Type: A sealed, waterproof cork disc drag that Tibor calls self-maintaining. It holds seal pressure even in free spool, so the reel will not overrun while you strip line onto the deck, and unlike most sealed drags it can be taken apart for service and stay under warranty.

Materials: Micro grain cork, constantly lubricated, which is where the low startup inertia and smooth pickup come from. Lubricate it only with Tibor Graphite Lube. Neatsfoot oil is not recommended because it dries the cork out over time.

Arbor Size

The 3.75 inch frame carries a 1.5 inch wide spool, deep enough to hold 250 yards of 20 pound braid or 200 yards of 20 pound Micron beneath a weight forward eight. Backing that deep on a spool this wide keeps the working diameter high well into a run, so line pickup stays quick when a bonefish has already taken you most of the way to the arbor. Do not exceed the rated capacity: overfilling the spool or winding on under heavy tension can damage it and is not covered by warranty.

Warranty

Tibor covers the reel with a limited lifetime warranty on repair or replacement of any part that fails through a defect in material or workmanship. It is valid for the original owner only, is non-transferable, and applies only to reels bought from an authorized Tibor dealer. It does not cover accident, misuse, neglect, improper maintenance or normal wear, and it excludes damage from overfilling the spool or stripping line against the frame. Any reel sent in for service carries an $85 fee per reel covering disassembly, inspection, cleaning, relubrication, reassembly, testing and insured return shipping, with a $150 rate for international shipping. Repairs outside the warranty are quoted for approval before work begins. Terms as published by Tibor, August 2026.
