Tibor Signature 9/10 Fly Reel

The Tibor Signature 9/10 Fly Reel is the size Tibor built for fish that take the backing. It is rated for 9 and 10 weight rods, and Tibor lists it against tarpon, permit, roosterfish, dorado, albacore, striped bass, salmon, snook, redfish, bonefish and pike, which makes it the one Signature that covers a flats week and a bluewater day without a second reel. It is machined from solid bar stock aluminum, made and assembled in the USA by Tibor Reel Corporation of Delray Beach, Florida, and it runs the lubricated cork drag behind more than 950 world records.

Design

The spool and frame are completely ventilated, which sheds heat during a long run and gives the reel its loud incoming and outgoing clicker. Tibor's approach here is subtraction: the whole reel is assembled from very few parts. The QuickChange spool system uses a single moving part to release and seat a spool, and a mechanical clutch converts the reel between right and left hand retrieve by reversing the clutch dogs, with no drag rebuild involved. Every reel is serialized for identification, with the number stamped under the nameplate on top of the frame next to the reel stand, and Tibor engraves a personalized nameplate free.

Finish

Tibor lists eight finishes for the Signature: Frost Silver, Frost Black, Satin Gold, Jet Black, Royal Blue, Crimson, Aqua and Graphite Gray, split between the Frost finishes and the polished finishes. The hub color is specified separately from the frame color, so the reel can be built as a single color or as a two-tone. Tibor restricts a Frost frame to one matching color part including the hub, while polished frames carry no hub restriction. Finish is cosmetic: it does not change the machining, the drag or the capacity.

Materials

Frame and spool are machined from solid bar stock aluminum rather than cast, which is what lets Tibor hold the tolerances the QuickChange spool and the clutch conversion depend on. The standard handle is Delrin, an acetal engineering plastic that grips positively with wet hands and releases quickly when a fish turns. Tibor's Gorilla Handle, which is standard on the larger Signature 11-12S, can be retrofitted to this reel if you want more to hold onto. The reel ships in an extra thick neoprene case.

Drag

Type: Tibor describes the Signature drag as a sealed system, waterproof and self-maintaining. It applies seal pressure constantly, including in free spool, so the spool will not overrun while you strip line onto the deck. Unusually for a sealed drag, Tibor states the system can be disassembled for maintenance and still remain under warranty.

Materials: The drag stack is micro grain cork, kept constantly lubricated. Cork gives low startup inertia and a smooth, progressive build of pressure, which is what a fish making its first run off a 10 weight needs from a drag. Tibor specifies Tibor Graphite Lube for the cork and warns against neatsfoot oil, which dries the cork out over time.

Arbor Size

Tibor does not assign the Signature an arbor class. What it does publish is the frame: 4.25 inches in diameter by 1.45 inches wide on the 9/10, at 9.5 ounces. The large frame diameter is what keeps the retrieve rate up once a fish has taken you down toward the core. Behind a 9 weight line the reel holds 200 yards of 30 lb Micron, or 175 yards behind a 10 weight. Move to 30 lb braid and it takes 350 yards behind a 9 weight and 325 yards behind a 10 weight, or 250 yards of 65 lb Power Pro Super 8 Slick.

Warranty

Tibor covers the Signature with a limited lifetime warranty on repair or replacement of any part defective in material or workmanship. It is valid for the original owner only, is not transferable, and applies only to reels bought through an authorized Tibor dealer. It does not cover accident, misuse, neglect, improper maintenance or normal wear from use over time. Separately, Tibor runs a factory service program, and as of August 2026 that is $85 per reel domestically or $150 per reel internationally, covering disassembly, inspection, cleaning, re-lubrication, reassembly, testing and insured return shipping, plus $25 for each additional domestic reel and $45 for each additional international reel. A $65 expedited fee returns the reel in two to six days; standard turnaround is ten to fifteen working days.
