Mustad Fly Tying Hooks Quick Picks

  • Best All-Around Dry Fly: Mustad Alpha Point R50AP Dry Fly Hooks - The modern version of the classic 94840, covering standard dry flies from size 4 down to 24. The AlphaPoint tip and matte TitanX finish make it a sensible default for Adams, Wulffs, and caddis.
  • Best for Nymphs: Mustad Alpha Point S80AP 3X Strong Nymph Hooks - A heavy sproat-bend hook with a down eye for wet flies, nymphs, and small streamers in sizes 4 through 20. The 3X strong wire adds sink and holds bigger fish.
  • Best for Streamers: Mustad Alpha Point R74AP Streamer Hooks - A 2X strong, 4X long round-bend hook for buggers, bucktails, and big terrestrials like hoppers.
  • Best for Saltwater: Mustad S71SNP-DT Saltwater Hooks - A 2X strong O'Shaughnessy-style hook with a 1X long shank and corrosion-resistant Duratin finish. Mustad calls out Crazy Charlies, Clousers, redfish, and permit patterns, and the straight eye keeps flies swimming true.
  • Best for Curved-Body Patterns: Mustad 37160-BR Wide Gap Caddis Hooks - Our top-selling Mustad hook, a wide-gap classic in sizes 4 through 14 for caddis larvae, scuds, crawdads, and San Juan worms.

How to Choose Mustad Fly Tying Hooks

Signature series vs. Alpha Point: what the model codes mean

Mustad sells two overlapping families. The Signature series (models ending in NP-BR or SNP-DT) uses a needle point, a micro barb, and a bronze finish for freshwater or Duratin for salt. The Alpha Point series (models ending in AP) adds the 4.8 AlphaPoint tip and a matte gunmetal TitanX finish that cuts glare.

Action: If a pattern already works on a Signature hook like the Mustad R50NP-BR Dry Fly Hooks, the matching Alpha Point model shares the same shape, so you can switch without re-learning proportions.

Match wire and shank length to the pattern

Dry flies: The R50 is the standard. Step up to the Mustad R43NP-BR Dry Fly Hooks for a 3X long shank on stoneflies, hoppers, and large Muddlers, or the Alpha Point R30AP 2X fine hooks when flotation matters most.

Nymphs and wets: The S70 is 2X strong and the S80 is 3X strong, both on a sproat bend. The Mustad Alpha Point S82AP Nymph Hooks add a 2X long shank for bigger stonefly and mayfly nymphs. For caddis larvae, Klinkhammer-style emergers, and shrimp, reach for the C49SNP-BR curved hook.

Streamers: The R73 (3X long), R74 (4X long), and R75 (5X long) cover most trout streamers. The Alpha Point L87AP is a 3X strong, 7X long Limerick-bend hook for New England featherwings and trolling flies.

Saltwater and specialty hooks

Best for: Flats and inshore work, the C70SNP-DT and S71SNP-DT, both 2X strong with a straight eye. For tarpon, pick the Mustad C68SNP-DT Tarpon Hooks for toads and short synthetic baitfish on a 2X short shank, or the Alpha Point C68SAP for a 3X strong, 1X long platform for Cockroaches and Black Deaths.

Avoid if: You want a hook scaled strictly for flies, the 3366-BR Sproat and 34007 O'Shaughnessy are general-purpose hooks that also see bait duty. The 100-pack pricing is hard to beat, but the Signature and Alpha Point models are proportioned for tying.

Why Trident Carries Mustad

Mustad has made hooks in Norway since 1832, and the fly line gives you a lot of coverage for the money. Signature hooks let a new tier fill dry, nymph, streamer, and saltwater boxes without spending much, while Alpha Point brings a sharper point and a low-glare finish to the same proven shapes.

Materials & Durability

  • Nor-Tempered steel: Mustad lists most of these hooks as forged and Nor-Tempered, its heat-treating process for strength. Test the point on a fingernail before tying.
  • Finish matters in salt: Duratin (DT) and the Titan Steel finish on the salmon double resist corrosion. Bronze (BR) hooks rust if they sit wet after a saltwater trip, so rinse and dry them.
  • Micro barbs pinch down: Mustad notes the micro barb can be pinched flat without damaging the hook, so one pack covers barbed and barbless water.
  • Touch up points: A few strokes with a hook hone restore a dulled needle point after you tick rocks.

Mustad Fly Tying Hooks FAQs

Q: What is the difference between Mustad Signature and Mustad Alpha Point hooks?

A: Signature hooks (NP-BR and SNP-DT models) use a needle point with a bronze or Duratin finish. Alpha Point hooks (AP models) use the newer 4.8 AlphaPoint tip and a matte TitanX finish.

Q: Which Mustad hook replaces the old 94840?

A: Mustad describes the R50 as the modern version of the 94840. The R50NP-BR is the bronze Signature version and the R50AP is the Alpha Point version.

Q: Are Mustad fly hooks barbless?

A: Most models here have a micro barb that Mustad says pinches down without damaging the hook, so one pack covers barbless water.

Q: Which Mustad hooks are best for tarpon?

A: The C68SNP-DT is a 2X strong, 2X short hook that suits toads and synthetic baitfish, while the Alpha Point C68SAP is 3X strong and 1X long for classic tarpon patterns. Both have a straight eye.

Q: Can I use Mustad bronze hooks in saltwater?

A: You can, but bronze corrodes if it stays wet. For salt, choose the Duratin (DT) models like the S71SNP-DT and C70SNP-DT, or the stainless 34007, and rinse flies after every trip.

Q: What does 2X strong or 4X long mean on a Mustad hook?

A: The X rating compares the hook to a standard hook of the same size: 2X strong wire is as heavy as a hook two sizes larger, and a 4X long shank is as long as a hook four sizes larger.
