Trip Summary
The Villages is a community-operated fishing lodge located directly on the lagoon shore of Kiritimati, commonly known as Christmas Island. Anglers walk from their bungalows to traditional outrigger skiffs for access to an immense network of hard-sand flats, coral flats, channels, and reef edges. Every angler fishes with a private walking guide, while groups and their guides share skiff transportation between fishing areas. Bonefish are the most dependable target, with Giant Trevally, Triggerfish, Bluefin Trevally, Golden Trevally, Milkfish, and reef species providing challenging secondary opportunities. Standard packages include seven nights and six guided fishing days. Accommodations and island infrastructure are basic, making this a fishing-first expedition for anglers who value access, guide attention, species diversity, and affordability over conventional luxury.
Who's It For?
Private Guide Every Day
Every angler fishes with a dedicated walking guide on the flats. The one-to-one ratio provides an additional set of experienced eyes, individualized positioning, and direct help with presentations, fly selection, and fish behavior.
Lagoon-Front Boat Access
Traditional outrigger skiffs are anchored immediately in front of the lodge. Many flats can be reached without lengthy vehicle transfers, although distant fishing areas may require longer boat rides or occasional truck access.
Expansive Walk-and-Wade Flats
Kiritimati contains miles of firm sand and coral flats where anglers sight-fish on foot for Bonefish, Triggerfish, Giant Trevally, and other species. The scale and variety of the habitat allow guides to adjust locations according to tides, wind, and visibility.
Straightforward Fishing-First Value
Seven-night packages include six guided fishing days, private guide service, accommodations, meals, island transfers, and current package taxes at a comparatively accessible saltwater-trip price.

Seasonal Fishing
Calendar
Warm temperatures and year-round fish populations make this a popular period for visiting Kiritimati. Rainfall, cloud cover, and wind can be more variable than promotional descriptions sometimes suggest, particularly during broader Pacific weather events. Tide selection remains more important than the calendar month for targeting specific flats and species.
Late spring and early summer remain productive across the atoll, but this period can bring increased humidity, showers, and changing trade winds. Cloud cover may reduce sight-fishing visibility, while changing water levels can open or close particular flats. Bonefish remain the most dependable target.
These months are generally drier on Kiritimati, although strong easterly trade winds can make casting demanding. Bright conditions can improve visibility over white-bottomed flats. GT, Triggerfish, and Milkfish opportunities continue to depend more on tides, location, and daily conditions than on a predictable seasonal migration.
November and December are popular with North American anglers seeking warm-weather fishing. Bonefish remain available throughout the lagoon, while spring tides can create short windows for Trevally movement. Wind, rain, and visibility remain variable, and no particular species or fishing result can be guaranteed.
Lodging & Accommodations
Accommodations
The Villages provides simple, air-conditioned beachside bungalows with twin beds, private bathrooms, hot showers, covered porches, and small refrigerators. Single-occupancy accommodations are available at an additional cost. The fishing program normally accommodates a maximum of 16 anglers. The central maneaba serves as the lodge’s gathering, dining, and bar area. Guests should expect clean and functional fish-camp accommodations rather than resort-style rooms, polished facilities, or extensive recreational amenities. Housekeeping and laundry service are provided, although infrastructure and replacement supplies can be limited by the island’s remote location.
Food
A hot breakfast is served before fishing. Guests normally prepare a sandwich from the morning lunch bar, with fruit, water, and other supplies packed into the skiff’s cooler. Evening appetizers may include fresh tuna or wahoo sashimi. Buffet-style dinners commonly feature locally available fish, chicken, pork, beef, rice, and vegetables.Menus depend on local availability and shipments reaching the island. Dietary restrictions should be communicated well before travel, but highly specialized foods may not be consistently available. Coffee, tea, juice, and a standard daily allocation of drinking water are included. Beer, alcohol, soda, and additional bottled water are available at extra cost.
Connectivity
Starlink WiFi is available at the lodge, but interruptions and reduced speeds remain possible. Cellular service should not be treated as dependable. WiFi-based messaging and calling applications are generally the most practical way to communicate from the island. The property has a mixture of 110-volt and 240-volt electricity, and outlet configurations can vary between rooms. Guests should bring a universal plug adapter and confirm that electronic devices accept both voltages. Power interruptions are possible. Tap water is not potable, so guests should drink only the purified or bottled water supplied by the lodge.
Target Species
Bonefish
Moustache Triggerfish
Yellowmargin Triggerfish
Giant Trevally
Bluefin Trevally
Golden Trevally
Barracuda
11-Day Itinerary
Each day is carefully planned to maximize your fishing success while experiencing the best of what this destination has to offer. Itineraries are flexible based on conditions and guest preferences.
The Villages operates around the single weekly Fiji Airways service between Honolulu and Kiritimati. Most U.S. anglers should fly to Honolulu at least one day before the international departure. Travelers coming from the East Coast may prefer to leave home on Sunday and reserve Monday as a full connection-buffer day. Hotels, taxis, meals, and activities in Honolulu are not included in the lodge package.
The current Fiji Airways schedule generally departs Honolulu on Tuesday around midday for the approximately three-hour flight to Cassidy International Airport. Because the flight crosses the International Date Line, guests arrive on Kiritimati on Wednesday. A lodge representative will meet the group for the approximately 30-to-45-minute drive to The Villages. After checking in, anglers can assemble rods, organize tackle, meet the guide team, and prepare for the first fishing day. Exact flight days and times must be reconfirmed before booking connecting travel.
Six guided fishing days begin with an early breakfast and preparation of a packed lunch. Anglers walk from their bungalows to the beach, where approximately three to five anglers, their private walking guides, and a boatman board a shared outrigger skiff. The head guide assigns fishing areas according to tides, wind, sunlight, water level, and target species. Most fishing is performed on foot over hard sand or coral, with the boatman remaining in radio contact and repositioning the skiff as needed. Fishing days commonly begin around 7:00 AM and end between 4:00 and 5:00 PM, although timing may change with conditions. Guests return for a shower, appetizers in the maneaba, and a buffet-style dinner.
After breakfast on Wednesday, guests transfer to Cassidy International Airport for the weekly flight to Honolulu. Crossing the International Date Line in the opposite direction means the flight arrives in Honolulu on Tuesday. Depending on the confirmed arrival time and onward schedule, travelers may connect home that day or spend another night in Honolulu. Because a cancellation of the weekly Kiritimati flight can cause a major disruption, flexible airfare, travel insurance, and emergency medical evacuation coverage are strongly recommended.
Frequently Asked Questions
GET IN TOUCHThe Villages is located directly on Discovery Beach, with its outrigger skiffs anchored only steps from the guest bungalows. This reduces reliance on long vehicle transfers and provides efficient access to the central lagoon. Its other defining feature is a one-to-one guide ratio, meaning every angler has a private walking guide while fishing the flats. Several anglers, guides, and a boatman still share the transport skiff.
The average Kiritimati Bonefish weighs approximately two to three pounds. Fish exceeding five pounds are noteworthy, and substantially larger Bonefish are possible but uncommon. The atoll supports strong numbers and anglers may receive multiple opportunities during favorable conditions, but claims of effortless daily catches or routinely large fish are unrealistic. Results depend on tides, weather, visibility, presentation, and angler ability.
Both species should be viewed as challenging secondary targets rather than guaranteed catches. Large GTs may appear suddenly and provide only a few seconds for a presentation. An angler can fish an entire week without landing one. Triggerfish may be easier to locate but are difficult to feed, hook, and keep away from coral. Landing either species is a meaningful accomplishment.
Each angler is assigned a private walking guide on the flats. Approximately three to five anglers, their guides, and a boatman normally share a large outrigger skiff for transportation. Once at the selected area, each angler separates with their guide and fishes independently. The guides carry radios so the boatman can reposition the skiff or move the group to another flat.
Spring tides around new and full moons create greater water movement and can open short windows for GTs and other Trevally to enter the flats. Those same tides can make some Bonefish and Triggerfish water available for shorter periods. Neap tides around quarter moons create smaller changes and may provide longer, more predictable wading windows. Neither cycle is universally better, so the ideal week depends on the angler’s target priorities.
Fishing is available throughout the year because Kiritimati is located close to the equator and experiences limited seasonal temperature change. January through April is especially popular with North American travelers, while July through October is generally drier. Rain, trade winds, cloud cover, and broader Pacific weather patterns can vary considerably from year to year. Tide timing is often more important than the month selected.
Bring at least one 8-weight outfit for Bonefish, a 9-weight for Triggerfish and medium Trevally, and an 11- or 12-weight outfit for GTs. Tropical floating lines are used for most flats fishing. Reels should have reliable saltwater drag systems and ample backing. Because replacement equipment is generally unavailable on the island, serious anglers should bring a backup Bonefish outfit, spare lines, repair supplies, and redundant terminal tackle.
Bonefish selections should include sparsely tied Christmas Island Specials, Crazy Charlies, Gotchas, and similar patterns in approximately sizes 6 through 8 with several weighting options. Triggerfish require durable crab patterns on strong hooks. GT selections should include large baitfish patterns and castable surface flies. Nine-to-ten-foot Bonefish leaders ending in approximately 10- to 16-pound tippet are standard, while GTs are commonly targeted with straight 80- to 100-pound leader material.
Guests should be prepared to wade and walk for most of each fishing day, often over firm sand, broken coral, uneven edges, and water ranging from ankle to knee depth. Supportive flats boots, gravel guards, quality wading socks, sun-protective clothing, and a compact waterproof pack are essential. Cuts can become infected quickly in tropical conditions, so anglers should carry basic wound-care supplies and immediately clean any coral injury.
Fiji Airways currently operates a single weekly nonstop flight between Honolulu and Cassidy International Airport. Travelers generally depart Honolulu on Tuesday and arrive on Kiritimati Wednesday after crossing the International Date Line. The return flight departs Kiritimati Wednesday and arrives in Honolulu Tuesday. Because missing or losing this flight can disrupt an entire week, guests should arrive in Honolulu at least one day early and avoid tight onward connections.
U.S. tourists currently do not require a visa for stays of 30 days or less. A passport valid for at least six months, an onward or return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds are required. The fishing license is included in 2027 packages, while 2026 anglers currently pay a license charge upon arrival. Australian dollars and U.S. dollars in small denominations are useful for gratuities and local purchases. Entry requirements, license arrangements, and accepted payment methods should be reconfirmed before departure.
