Description

Scientific Anglers Amplitude MPX may be our favorite all-around trout line for fast-action rods. If you've watched any of our fly rod reviews, you've probably seen us casting the Amplitude MPX. This line was made to replace the GPX, SA's previous iteration of a do-it-all trout line. The MPX features more mass toward the front of the head, however, and allows anglers to access distance casting capabilities without sacrificing finesse. If you're looking for a versatile line to properly load your fast-action freshwater fly rod, you've come to the right place.

Features

AST Plus Slickness - SA has built a number of important features into this line. AST Plus Slickness allows anglers to quickly shoot line with friction-minimizing performance. Welded loops on both ends allow easy leader/backing attachment. A braided multifilament core is strong and supple for versatility and durability. The MPX also features a floating texture on the tip section and a shooting texture on the running line for floatation in the front half of the line and castability in the back half.

Uses

Large Dries, Nymphs, Streamers in Moderate and Cold Climates - The MPX is designed as a freshwater trout line. SA made this line for larger dry flies, heavy nymphs, and even small to medium-sized streamers. As such, it's a cold water line that doesn't do well in overly hot environments. This line is also great for picking up large dries from a drift boat or streamers on the lake and quickly recasting/ shooting line. This isn't the best line for small dry fly presentations, small creek fishing, or slow-action rods (fiberglass, bamboo, etc.). It's also not a great line if you're trying to carry a lot of line in the air to land a fly on a dinner plate at 60 feet.

Temp

Cold/Moderate - This line is made to be used in cold and moderate climates, including freshwater streams and rivers, lakes almost any climate. That being said, this line will turn limp in tropical climates and isn't meant to be used in high heat.

Taper/Weight

More Mass Toward the Front of the Head - Built a half-size heavy, the Amplitude MPX has a short front taper. The MPX taper is built to load fast-action rods for power and accuracy at distance. Most of the line's mass is found in the first 20 feet of the head, and the head is shorter and heavier than other dry fly specific lines (36-foot head length on the WF5F version). This helps anglers quickly load fast-action rods and shoot line at longer distances, think quick shots with larger dry flies from a drift boat.
