One of the top flies for fooling the Silver King, the Tarpon Toad Fly has been hooking these giants for years. The Tarpon Toad was created by Gary Merriman of Atlanta, Georgia for catching tarpon and has been noted to be one of the most consistently-producing flies for these hard-to-fool fish since. Gary’s style of tying the Tarpon Toad is done the original way, and that’s with a zonker strip tail that’s tied skin-side up--this is because tarpon will see this fly from the bottom--a short collar of marabou, an EP fiber body, and plastic eyes.
The Tarpon Toad is a fly that’s full of motion and doesn’t sink quickly but instead hovers in the water when fished on a floating or intermediate line; however, if you want it to get on the bottom, it’s best to incorporate a sink tip or sinking line. While the Tarpon Toad doesn’t imitate any specific type of food, it’s a very effective searching pattern, and is most commonly fished in the color of chartreuse. From flats and channels of the Florida Keys to mangroves in Cuba, the Tarpon Toad is a fly that should always be in your tarpon arsenal.
