Kay Fly Lodge sits in the small fishing village of Punta Allen on the shores of Ascension Bay, one of the most renowned saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. From the lodge, anglers can quickly reach a vast network of turtle grass flats, mangrove lagoons, and tidal channels that hold excellent numbers of Permit, Bonefish, Tarpon, and Snook.

Ascension Bay has long been considered one of the top destinations anywhere for targeting Permit on the fly. Anglers fishing with Kay Fly spend their days scanning expansive flats for tailing fish while also having opportunities at Bonefish, Tarpon, and other species that thrive in this rich ecosystem.

Seasonal Fishing
Calendar

December – February
75-85 °F
Permit Tarpon Bonefish Snook

March – May
75-85 °F
Permit Tarpon Bonefish

One of the most consistent fishing windows of the year. Stable spring weather and warming water bring excellent opportunities for Permit and Bonefish. Migratory Tarpon begin arriving in the bay toward the end of this period.

June - August
80-90 °F
Permit Tarpon Bonefish

Peak migratory Tarpon season with large fish moving through Ascension Bay and nearby channels. Permit and Bonefish remain readily available across the flats. Warm weather and occasional afternoon showers are common.

September – November
75-85 °F
Permit Tarpon Bonefish

Productive fall fishing with fewer anglers on the water. Early fall can still offer shots at migratory Tarpon before they taper off. Permit and Bonefish fishing remains strong, though this period overlaps with the Caribbean hurricane season.

Frequently Asked Questions

GET IN TOUCH

Kay Fly Lodge offers something for everyone, from Bonefish for beginners to Permit for advanced anglers. To target Permit specifically, anglers should be comfortable casting heavy crab patterns accurately at 60 feet in the wind.

Most importantly, you should practice casting in windy conditions. As with any saltwater trip, wind can be a major factor in Mexico. Also, purchasing the right gear, tackle, and clothing is important - use our recommended packing lists. You should think about your goals for the trip so that you can relay them to your guides. And lastly, figure out your travel logistics well in advance.

Kay Fly Lodge is best suited for dedicated anglers or fishing-focused groups. If you're looking for a lodge with non-angling activities for families, there are other options we'd recommend.

Kay Fly Lodge has a capacity of 10 anglers.

Yes, purified drinking water is always available at the lodge and on the panga.

Mexico's currency is the Mexican peso (MXN). U.S. dollars are readily accepted in Mexico, but change will be given in pesos. Please bring enough cash to cover gratuities and incidentals.

Electrical outlets are the same as in the U.S. - 110 Volt AC power.

Yes, tipping is customary although it is at your discretion. Tipping 15-20 % of your trip total per person is recommended. Please plan on tipping in cash.

Medical emergencies and evacuations can happen in remote destinations, which is why we strongly recommend enrolling with Global Rescue before your trip. Global Rescue provides industry-leading medical and security evacuation services, and they also offer comprehensive travel insurance plans serviced through IMG. This all-in-one solution allows anglers to secure both emergency evacuation coverage and travel insurance through a single provider, helping ensure you’re protected if something unexpected occurs before or during your trip.
