Fly Line Backing: What it is and How Much You Need

In this video, we'll take you through the fundamentals of Fly Line Backing, including its purpose, types, and how much backing you need. We'll disc...

Fly line backing is the unsung hero of your reel setup, serving as a critical insurance policy when a trophy fish makes a blistering run. Beyond fighting fish, it increases your arbor size for faster line retrieval and reduced memory. Whether you need standard Dacron for trout or high-capacity gel-spun for saltwater giants, our selection ensures you stay connected to the fish of a lifetime.

Backing Quick Picks

  • Best All-Around: Cortland Micron Fly Line Backing - A time-tested favorite for trout and freshwater species. Its tight, round braid ensures low stretch and high abrasion resistance without breaking the bank.

  • Best Premium High-Capacity: Scientific Anglers Ultra Premium Backing - Engineered with UHMWPE for an incredibly thin diameter. This backing allows you to load significantly more yardage onto your reel, making it ideal for saltwater species that make long runs.

  • Best for Splicing: PowerPro Hollow Ace Fly Line Backing - A hollow-core design that allows for seamless, knotless splicing. Perfect for big game setups where connection strength and smooth travel through guides are paramount.

  • Best Value: Rio Dacron Fly Line Backing - Reliable performance at an accessible price point. This backing offers high visibility and consistent strength for everyday angling needs.

How to Choose Backing

Selecting the right backing involves balancing capacity, diameter, and material properties with your target species. While often an afterthought, the right choice ensures you are prepared when a fish takes you deep into the spool.

Material: Dacron vs. Gel Spun vs. Hollow Core

Dacron: The standard for decades, Dacron (polyester) is budget-friendly, knots easily, and offers sufficient strength for most freshwater fishing. It is thicker than modern super-braids, which limits capacity on smaller reels, but its texture helps prevent it from digging into itself under pressure.

Gel Spun (GSP): Made from polyethylene, Gel Spun backing is incredibly strong and much thinner than Dacron. This allows you to fit up to 75% more yardage on a reel, which is critical for saltwater species like Tarpon or GT. However, it can be slippery and harder to knot securely.

Hollow Core: A specialized polyethylene braid designed to be spliced rather than knotted. This creates 100% strength connections that are seamless and smooth, eliminating bulky knots that can catch in guides during a high-speed run.

Strength and Capacity

20lb: The standard for trout, bass, and general freshwater fishing (typically 2-6wt rods). It provides ample protection without unnecessary bulk.

30lb: The go-to for heavier freshwater applications (steelhead, salmon, pike) and light saltwater use (bonefish, redfish). It offers higher abrasion resistance and strength.

50lb+: Reserved for big game saltwater fishing (tarpon, tuna, billfish). In these scenarios, capacity and sheer stopping power are the priorities, often necessitating Gel Spun or Hollow Core materials to maximize reel space.

Care & Maintenance

  • Rinse After Saltwater Use: Always rinse your backing thoroughly with fresh water after fishing in the salt. Salt crystals can become trapped deep in the spool, leading to corrosion of the reel arbor over time.

  • Check for Rot: While modern synthetics are resistant, older Dacron can degrade. Periodically strip off a few yards to check for strength and integrity, especially if the reel has been stored for years.

  • Avoid "Digging In": When winding backing onto a reel, apply tight, even tension. Loose backing can cause the line to bury itself during a fight, potentially causing a jam that breaks the tippet.

Backing FAQs

Q: How much backing do I need?

A: For trout, 50-100 yards is usually sufficient to fill the spool and provide insurance. For saltwater species like bonefish or tarpon, you typically need 200-300 yards or more to handle long, blistering runs.

Q: Can I use braided fishing line as backing?

A: Yes, Gel Spun backing is essentially braided fishing line. However, ensure it is non-abrasive to avoid damaging your fly rod guides, and be aware that thin braid can cut fingers under tension.

Q: Why is backing color important?

A: High-visibility colors like orange, yellow, or pink help you track the direction of a fish during a fight. It also provides a visual indicator of how much line you have left on the spool.

Q: What is the best knot for attaching backing to the reel?

A: The Arbor Knot is the standard connection for attaching backing to the reel spool. It tightens down securely on the arbor and won't slip when spooled correctly.

Q: Does backing expire?

A: Synthetic backing like Dacron and Gel Spun lasts a very long time, but it can weaken from UV exposure or rot if stored wet and dirty. It is wise to inspect it periodically and replace it if it shows signs of wear or discoloration.
