The Ross Evolution series has been around for quite some time now, and for good reason. Known for being dependable and solid, Ross looks to build on this reputation with the all-new Ross Evolution FS Fly Reel. Standing for “Fresh/Salt”, the FS is billed as a double-duty freshwater and saltwater capable reel which is beefed up to be the most robust reel in the Ross lineup. Continue reading to see our impressions of this sturdy new tool from Ross.
Weight
We know that with increased durability comes increased fly reel weight. This is certainly the case with the Ross Evolution FS. This reel in the 4/5 size weighs in at a whopping 6.1oz! For context, the Evolution R 4/5 sits at 4.8oz. So, in a world of more and more featherweight rods and reels, why should you consider this tank of a reel?
For starters, this reel should be bomb-proof for generations. If you’re particularly hard on gear, this is an obvious win. Secondly, a heavier reel can balance certain rods extremely well. We’re thinking euro nymphing, trout spey, or any other situation where you’re casting a longer-than-average rod for hours on end. Heavy? Yes. Bulletproof? Also yes.
Drag

The Evolution FS features a stacked-disc drag that Ross calls a hybrid between the Evolution LTX and the Animas. Unfortunately, the drag isn’t sealed, so if you do plan on using this reel in saltwater, you’ll want to make sure you thoroughly rinse it off after each use. In terms of drag strength, the FS is packed with more than enough fish-stopping power. Thanks to the integrity of the frame, the reel holds up fine to the forces of max-drag pressure.
Sound
The sound of the FS drag is music to our ears. The incoming and outgoing sounds are differentiated, and both sound excellent.
Spool & Retrieval Rate

The Evolution FS in the 4/5 size has a spool diameter of 3.42”, a narrow width of just 0.96”, and an arbor diameter of 2.22”. These specs allow for ample backing of 200+ yards, and an impressive retrieval rate of 7.6” per revolution.
Looks & Ergonomics

Ross seemingly looked to the Ross Colorado for aesthetic inspiration for the Evolution FS, featuring similar aerodynamic soft edges, and machine-engraved land and sea artwork on the frame. It’s an unquestionably stunning reel. Ergonomically, the large canvas micarta handle is easy to grab and enhances grip quality when wet. The drag knob is large enough to find easily and features notching to grip with ease.
Warranty
As of 2023, Ross offers a Limited Lifetime Warranty to the original owner.
Price: $595
Conclusion

We like this FS from Ross. The design, build quality, and technical aspects place it right up there with other premium reels on the market. The only major drawbacks are weight and the lack of a sealed drag, which makes us question whether this should be advertised as a saltwater reel. But, as we mentioned above, the drag is certainly more than capable of any saltwater battle, just remember to take care in rinsing the reel often. Overall, the Ross Evolution FS is a great premium reel for anglers who need a durable, heavyweight workhorse.
