Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Forgiving for beginner casters, a great learning rod!
  • It pairs well with the included specialty fly line from Lamson
  • Accurate at key trout distances of 30-45’

Cons

  • Not a great dry fly/presentation rod - at least not with the included fly line
  • Standard overseas build quality and basic componentry

Who It’s For

The Lamson Liquid Fly Rod is designed to be a forgiving casting tool that loads easily at key trout distances, especially with aggressively tapered weight-forward fly lines. For anglers who are still figuring out the timing of their casting stroke, the Liquid’s medium-fast action will help them feel the rod bend throughout the cast, and will shoot line relatively easily for increased distance. For applications like nymphing, streamer fishing, or throwing poppers for Bass, the Liquid will perform quite well. Additionally, intermediate and advanced anglers should consider the Liquid as a solid backup rig for most non-technical fishing situations.

For anglers who want a finesse rod for delicate presentations like dry flies or long, thin leaders, the Liquid is not the best tool for the job. This rod is designed for shooting heavier heads and won’t load properly with longer, lighter rigs.

Fit & Finish

lamson-liquid-outfit-fly-rod

Aesthetically, the Lamson Liquid is a decently attractive budget rod. Sure, it’s no Winston or Scott, but we can’t expect a premium level of workmanship for an overseas-built rod whose retail value is somewhere south of $200. An anodized aluminum reel seat and a modified snub-nosed hall-wells grip look simple and clean. The blank is a matte black partially unsanded finish that looks slick, and is fairly similar to the Atlas Singnature’s blank. Basic stripper and snake guides complete the rod, although their material is not indicated by Lamson. Overall, the outfit makes fairly basic componentry look quite nice in this clean, well-designed package.

Distance

Beginner anglers often struggle to cast for distance, as the timing required to shoot line effectively takes practice to achieve. The Lamson Liquid Fly Rod makes shooting line easier due to its forgiving medium-fast action, especially when paired with the specialty fly line included in the outfit. Novice casters will have little problem casting 30-45’ confidently. At longer distances up to 60’, the rod still proves to be powerful, but at the expense of distance control. Additionally, false casting becomes tougher at longer ranges because of the fly line’s heavy head. In short - keep false casting to a minimum to achieve the impressive distance potential of the Lamson Liquid Fly Rod.

Accuracy

We were very impressed with the accuracy of the Lamson Liquid, which was reasonably consistent at 30’, 45’, and even 60’. Expert casters will be able to detect some wobble, especially those familiar with ultra-accurate rods like the Orvis Helios. But for beginners and intermediate anglers, the Lamson Liquid will be completely adequate for most casting situations.

Flex & Feel

The Liquid features a medium-fast action blank that offers lots of feel and forgiving timing. Beginners will appreciate the ability to feel the rod load, helping them fine-tune their stroke while building confidence. Additionally, the blank is powerful enough to shoot line at a distance, given the proper line pairing.

Value

Price: $359.99

When you consider the price of the Liquid Fly Reel and a typical budget fly line, you can estimate the cost of the Liquid Fly Rod alone to be somewhere around $150. And if you’re thinking that sounds extremely affordable, you’re correct. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a standalone rod under $200 that’s even worth mentioning, let alone one that exhibits solid performance. Considering its caster-friendly action, reasonable accuracy, and handsome appearance, the Lamson Liquid is a steal for the price. Although you can’t purchase this rod by itself, the addition of the Liquid Fly Reel and a thoughtfully paired fly line only add value to this compelling package.

Conclusion

lamson-liquid-outfit-fly-rod

There’s a lot to like about the Lamson Liquid Outfit Fly Rod. For beginner and intermediate anglers, the Liquid will make casting easier and more fun, especially when fairly accurate casts are required at a distance. Additionally, it’s a handsome rod that features thoughtful design elements like a comfortable cork handle and a partially unsanded blank. Lastly, we see tons of value in this outfit: for under $360, this is one of the best options for a beginner to get fully equipped to fish. While this overseas-built rod isn’t great for delicate presentations, and it lacks the sophisticated components of rods like the Lamson Radius, it will undoubtedly be a popular choice for beginner and intermediate anglers alike. If you’re looking for a solid outfit that’s forgiving to cast and easy on the wallet, consider the Lamson Liquid Outfit as a top choice.
