Description
Powerful, easy casting shooting heads that make long-distance casts simple. RIO's shooting heads are based on the popular OutBound Short lines and are designed to cast very long distances. The front-loaded weight distribution quickly loads a rod, while the unique step-down taper at the back allows for very long flight times and easy distance. The heads are built two sizes above the AFTM standard to correctly load modern rods—anglers do not need to step up a line size when choosing a line for their rod, as this is done in the design. Each head has an EasyID loop at the back end for quick recognition. RIO recommends attaching the following head sizes to these shooting line sizes: ST7 to ST8 - 0.024/0.026 shooting line, or 25lb SlickShooter/GripShooter; ST8 to ST10 - 0.030/0.032 shooting line or 35lb SlickShooter/GripShooter.

Great head... some modifications needed.
"The factory installed loop for attaching running line is a little too bulky and ‘ bangs’ through my guides so I always cut them off and replace them with braided loops. I do not like Rio’s marketing of ignoring the standard guidelines for flylines for matching lines with rods..traditional thinking has been, when fishing with a stiff graphite rod you should overline by one or two line weights but Rio has already done that. When you by an 8 wt head as they advertised the line it’s actually already almost two weights heavier than an 8 wt line should be. Buyers should be aware of this. Otherwise these are great lines and I have bought several over the last few years."

"I added the ST8S6-315gr to the arsenal. This stuff shoots the same as the other 2 I have. The S6 gets down fast. Its not as fast as some of the others I have, but really does the trick. This line is great for casting into rips and keeping you fly under the surface.With the 3 heads and shooting line, this really makes a great 1 rod solution. Or, even a great backup for anything.Just and FYI, the package lists the weight as 330 on these."

"I have the ST8F-315gr and the ST8I-315gr heads. I matched them on a Sage Xi3 8wt and powerflex .030 floating shooting line. The system is great. These heads have the weight necessary to load the rod with one false cast. It really is load and let it rip out there. The intermediate does not sink too fast at all, but the clear color is nice. The floating head floats high, and that is all you can ask for.I think for the 8wt I could have used the next diameter down shooting line, but these heads still get it out there fast. Throwing big poppers was my plan with this line and it is great at that. I have found that with the loop-to-loop connection right at the rod tip you get the best distance.It should be noted that I really like shooting heads when the situation allows for it."
