Description

Whether you need to land a small parachute in front of a rising trout on a spring creek or send an 80’ cast inches ahead of a cruising tarpon, accuracy is about as important as it gets for success, and with Orvis’ all-new Helios 4 D, they’ve cranked the accuracy way up–four times more than their previous Helios–while greatly improving on the overall performance of their previous Helios series. The Helios 4 D was designed to offer distance (which is what the “D” stands for), lifting power, excellent line speed, and pinpoint accuracy while maintaining versatility over a wide range of fishing situations. From tightline nymphing small streams, stripping streamers over a large river, or double hauling to anything from striped bass to permit, the Helios 4 D does it all. Orvis makes the Helios 4 D in a wide assortment of lengths and rod weights ranging from a 10’ 4-weight all the way to an 8’5” 14-weight, providing an option whether casting out of a boat into foaming pelagics or picking apart pocket water on your favorite home stream. An excellent addition to the Orvis family of rods, the Helios D is crafted in the USA with ultra-crisp casting and a lightweight feel that lets you handle those 12-hour shifts with ease–factor in high-quality components and you’ll see why this is a rod that you’ll be happy to use for decades.

Blank

Helios 4 Technology - Orvis makes their Helios 4 D Rod with their updated Helios technology. While H3 was an excellent addition to their rods, the new H4 Technology is that much better. Providing four times the accuracy of the Helios 3 Tech with a 10% reduction in swing weight, this new family of rods provides on-a-dime-accuracy and a fast action that focuses on distance–this combines to ensure that you can land a fly exactly where you need it, every single time. And while performance is at the heart of these rods, durability is far from sacrificed–Orvis’ Helios 4 Rods can stand up to an incredible amount of pressure before breaking and are 25% more durable than previous tech.

Whether you’re a fan of it or not, Orvis did bring back the grey and white butt section on this family of rods. This bottom section is accented by a more subdued midnight black blank with black thread wraps that provide a stealthy look.

Guides

Titanium Stripping Guides - Durable, anti-corrosive, and as slick as it gets, the Helios 4 D is outfitted with Titanium Stripping Guides. These are a reliable choice and are sure to provide slickness that lasts for many years to come.

Titanium Snake Guides - Titanium Snake Guides complement the Titanium Stripping Guides quite well on this family of rods. This choice is lightweight, durable, anti-corrosive, and provides top-notch shootability.

Reel Seat

Asymmetrical Reel Seat - With an updated asymmetrical positioning, the Helios 4 D makes it nice and easy to lock your reel in on those early mornings. For the freshwater-specific reel seats, you get a sharp-looking wood insert, while the saltwater-ready models are made from a lightweight and anti-corrosive metal.

Rod Tube

Orvis knows that buying a new Helios 4 D is an investment that you’ll have for decades–a rod that you’ll be taking on those once-in-a-lifetime trips just as often as you’ll use it on your home waters, and for that reason, they store it in a lightweight yet ultra-durable aluminum rod tube.

Warranty

As of February 2024, Orvis’ Helios 4 D Fly Rods are backed by their 25-Year Guarantee. This is a straightforward and excellent warranty that lasts for 25 years. It doesn’t matter whether you slam it in a door, step on it, or encounter a manufacturer defect, Orvis will repair or replace your rod. If the rod can’t be repaired and it' out of production, Orvis will choose a newer model of at least equal value.

Perfect fit

"Making switch to made in the USA exclusively, this rod is the perfect fit to my cast and the waters I fish. Great purchase!"

Beast of a rod

"I got the 10ft 7wt Helios and love it. It’s a very fast action and can fire line out. It feels incredibly solid but also exceptionally accurate. It’s end game territory"

Wow….

"So I was always of the opinion rods didn’t really matter when work with what you got. I still think you don’t have to a top tier rod to have fun. But when I say this rod made a significant difference for my overall fly fishing experience I might be under selling it. I bought a TFO to start out. A pro 3 . It was decent. I’ve got an older st croix to try cheap. I tried a recon 2 from Orvis thinking this is great. I’ve caught a ton of fish off the recon as well. So for starting off fly fishing and catching the recon 2 is magnificent and I still love it. Comparing this to the recon 2 is interesting. I’m not full of experience but even I can tell this a precision tuned instrument. It has greater control over distance for accuracy in my opinion. It weighs almost nothing in my hands and the line just glides through effortlessly. I believe in good line after making the mistake of cheap line. I used several of my regular reels with sinking and floating lines to compare between rods. This definitely outshines everything for distance and accuracy. On my first outing I got six decent fish in a two hour period. Probably not stellar but for a guy like me awesome. I’m currently getting between 30 and 80 foot cast pretty decently depending on my needs. Keep in mind I’m just starting and I really believe you can do much better if you know what you are doing. I love the rod. I use the recon 2 the most but I do best I feel with the Helios. I like the recon blue more than I like black of the Helios. It isn’t to say it’s an unattractive rod but I like blue. That being said like the black on the rod it’s all business and the romance comes in the use and feel. Try casting it I think you will notice a remarkable difference. It’s like going from nice muscle car to a Ferrari. Wishing everyone success while continuing to cast badly. Good fishing"

Fantastic Rod

"Does everything you want. Accurate, powerful, light. Great rod."

Nightmare shipping!!!!!

"Still waiting for my rod. WHY DO THESE PEOPLE USE UPS? They are the very very worst shipping company to use. Especially with expensive items. UPS is like the delivery guy in Ace Ventura. They will SLOW WALK and mishandle your packages. On top of this UPS now lies about delivering your package and they send it straight to the access center to save time if they are running late. The only thing worse than UPS are companies that use them! Trident needs to open a Amazon Store or use Fedex. Until they do I will be buying from somebody else next time. A total nightmare!"

Great Rod

"As someone who has followed blank materials and design, for a few decades, I like to try the most recent “technology. ” The difference in performance among manufacturers has become less apparent. I’ve been disappointed that it’s difficult to distinguish the performance difference between a $250 rod and a $1200 rod. I purchased then quickly traded the previous version of this rod. I’ve fished the H4 12 wt for Tarpon, the 8 wt for bonefish and have now purchased two Helios 4’s in 6 and 4 wt. These rods are a “step” up from other premium rods I’ve built or purchased. I have better control of the casting path. For me, these are more accurate."

Doug P. (5/5)

Dang Their Great

"When these first came out, I knew I had to have one. As it turns out, I was wrong, I bought two. One was a 5wt and the other was a 8wt. I have fished both on several different species of fish and all I can say is dang their great. One of the most accurate rods I’ve ever fished and know if something goes wrong, I have a company with one of the best warranties ever."

Helios 4D 8wt 9’

"The rod is amazing, but beyond that the experience with Trident was flawless. I can’t recommend them highly enough."
