Tried and true
"Perfect for an old hardy featherweight. Less memory and smaller diameter really helps on a smaller reel"
As fly rods continue to get stiffer and lines continue to feature more aggressive tapers and heavier heads, Cortland has created a line series that harkens back to the older days of fly fishing. Built to be partnered with moderate action rods, the Cortland 444 Classic series takes a delicate approach to freshwater fly angling. This is a great line for anglers who prefer bamboo fly rods and features an ultrathin diameter for improved delicacy and performance.
Welded Loop, High Floating Coating - Cortland has built a few different features into this line to keep it simple and functional on the water. The line is designed to float high in the water with a coating that also improves casting capabilities. A loop at the front end allows anglers to easily attach leaders, so you can focus on the fishing instead of the rigging. The line features a speckled yellow color scheme and a braided nylon multifilament core.
Designed for Fine Bamboo Rods - This is one of the only fly lines in the industry that's designed for high-end bamboo fly rods. While most anglers choose a double taper or a traditional line when fishing with bamboo fly rods, Cortland has created a line that works best with moderate action old-fashioned rods. This is a great line for small dry flies, small to medium-sized streams, and traditional trout angling.
Cold/Moderate - This line is made to be used in cold and moderate climates, including freshwater streams and rivers, lakes, and almost any climate. That being said, this line will turn limp in tropical climates and isn't meant to be used in high heat.
Classic Taper w/ DT Option - Like other lines in this series, the 444 Sylk comes with the option of either a double taper line or a line with a contemporary taper. The weight-forward line features a 10' front taper, 24' body, and 3' back taper for ultimate finesse when fishing with a bamboo rod. The WF5F version of the line features a 30' head weight of 140 grains, which makes it true-to-line size. The double taper shares the same 30' head weights as the weight-forward version.

"I bought Sylk DT 5wt. To give that 10’ front taper a try. Very definitely makes for a delicate dry fly presentation with a seven foot leader and 18” of 7x tippet. Line lands extremely gently and the fly flutters to the water after. The negative is this line doesn’t cast real far without lots of effort and good timing. The line isn’t as buoyant as some other lines either especially in mixed current but this line really excels in calmer water anyway. #22 BWO to brookies or browns and this is the line."
"Have not used this line yet. Purchased for a bamboo rod that will be made this summer. Have purchased this line for use with bamboo and fiberglass rods and like the way it performs."
"Great service from Trident, The Cortland 444 Classic Sylk Fly Line is my goto for my bamboo rods."
"Bought this line specifically for my Linen dry fly rod. The rod casts similar to a traditional bamboo rod or lamiglass rod and I am ecstatic to try this line with it to complete my dry fly specific setup!"
"I use this on my bamboo rods. Terrific!"
