Scott Session four-piece graphite fly rod with cork handle and black zippered tube for fly fishing

Scott hasn’t offered a true mid-priced rod since the Flex, so the release of the Session series was highly anticipated. Anglers were eager to see how Scott would bring their signature feel and build quality to a more accessible price point. We’ve already published a full model-by-model breakdown (Here) of the Session lineup, but this review takes a closer look at the flagship 9’ 5wt model. Keep reading to learn about the new Scott Session, what we like about it most, and find out how it stacks up on the water.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Made in the USA
  • High quality fit & finish
  • Excellent dry fly performance at key trout distances

Cons

  • Lacks power at long distances
  • Not ideal for indicator rigs or heavy streamers

Who It’s For

The Scott Session is a great fit for anglers who want the signature feel and craftsmanship of a Scott rod without stepping up to the Centric’s premium price point. It’s especially well-suited for dry fly purists and those who fish dry-dropper rigs throughout the season. If you’re after a slightly softer, more moderate feel that still delivers crisp performance and modern accuracy, the Session hits a very appealing middle ground.

Fit & Finish

True to form, the Session 905 looks and feels unmistakably like a Scott. The unsanded blank, finished in matte gray with green accent wraps and alignment dots, gives it that classic, understated aesthetic Scott fans expect. Hardware is solid throughout, with a green wood insert, double-uplocking reel seat, and lightweight snake guides paired with silicon nitride stripping guides. One standout detail is the grip: a uniquely shaped full-wells that’s more comfortable and ergonomic than the one found on the Centric. Overall, the Session has the kind of refined, dialed-in build quality that makes it feel like a far more expensive rod.

Flex & Feel

The Session 905 has a soft tip and a firmer butt section, giving it a smooth, progressive flex that’s easy to load and fun to cast. At close range, it performs especially well. Whether you're working a single dry or a dry-dropper rig, the rod feels crisp and responsive, particularly with a slightly heavier line like SA MPX.

Mid-range is where this rod feels most at home. Paired with a lighter line like Rio Gold or SA Amplitude Trout, it delivers clean loops, tracks well, and offers just enough feedback to keep you connected throughout the cast. Roll casts, mends, and quick changes of direction come naturally.

At longer distances, especially past 60 feet or in windy conditions, the soft tip starts to show its limits. It can get there with a smooth, deliberate stroke, but this isn’t the rod you reach for when power is the priority. It excels in controlled trout scenarios rather than high-line-speed situations.

The rod feels very light in hand, with excellent balance and swing weight. It offers that high-end feel Scott is known for, making it a strong option for anglers who appreciate precision and sensitivity over brute force.

Value

Price: $695.00

At $695, the Session 905 hits a sweet spot in the mid-priced rod market. You get premium components, excellent fit and finish, and the feel of a true Scott — all at a price that’s well below top-tier models like the Centric. It’s also made in the USA, which sets it apart from much of the competition in this range.

Scott Session and Scott Centric fly rods placed side by side for a direct comparison of build and hardware.

Compared to the Sage Sonic, which retails for the same price, the Session offers a more refined feel and a deeper flex profile that’s better suited to dry flies and lighter presentations. The Sonic is a stiffer, faster rod with more backbone at distance, but it lacks the touch and nuance that make the Session so enjoyable at typical trout ranges. For anglers who prioritize feel and finesse over raw power, the Session is the better all-around trout tool.

Conclusion

The Scott Session 905 is a versatile, well-built rod that delivers the kind of feel and fishability Scott fans have come to expect, without the premium price tag of the Centric. It is an ideal choice for dry fly anglers and anyone looking for a lightweight, responsive rod that performs best at typical trout distances. While it is not built for long-range casting or heavy streamer work, it makes up for that with excellent touch, accuracy, and all-day comfort. For those looking for a high-quality, American-made rod with classic Scott character, the Session 905 is easy to recommend.
