Fly Tied by Umpqua Feather Merchants

Though it has a simple look, don't be fooled, because the WD-40 Fly is a nymph that packs a serious punch. Developed in southern Colorado by Mark Engler over twenty years ago, the WD-40 Fly is his fly for matching small BWO nymphs and tiny midges larvae. Tied with a short handful of materials, the WD-40 has a barred tail and wingcase of mallard, slim thread body, and dubbed thorax--nothing too fancy, but boy does this fly work.

The WD-40 Fly is a fly that can be fished all year, but it pays to fish it in early spring and fall whenever tiny Baetis mayflies are most active, and the most common sizes are 18-22. When fishing the WD-40, you can count on working it through riffles, tailouts, and pocket water, and it also shines as a bottom fly in a multi-nymph setup. From winter expeditions to the first tailwater trip of the season, the WD-40 is a nymph that should always be in your rotation.
