Bronze anodized Sage trout fly reel with perforated aluminum spool, silver drag knob and silver reel foot

The latest iteration of the Sage Trout fly reel is here, featuring a blend of classic aesthetics and modern technology. Like its predecessor, the new Sage Trout is a full-cage reel that balances out longer Trout Spey or Euro rods nicely, while offering decent performance across the board. We thoroughly inspected the Sage Trout, identifying the pros and cons to help you decide if it's the right reel for you. Keep reading to learn more about this updated freshwater reel from Sage.

Weight

If you’re looking for a featherweight reel to complement a shorter rod, look elsewhere. The Sage Trout weighs in at 5.5 ounces in the 5wt size which is a bit heavy but about standard for full-cage reels. The Sage Trout would be a great option for Trout Spey or Euro Nymphing applications, as it balances out longer rods very nicely.

Drag

Like the Sage Trout Spey and Spey II reels, the Trout features Sage’s single-turn disc drag system. We like this drag - it’s smooth, powerful, and easily adjustable. Offering about 5 lbs of maximum drag pressure, the Sage Trout will give you more than enough drag for any freshwater fishing scenario. It’s also a fully-sealed drag, so you can rest assured that the internals are protected from the elements for the life of the reel.

Sound

The incoming and outgoing sounds are slightly differentiated, and overall quite pleasing. If we could change anything, we’d make them a bit louder and more differentiated, but this is subjective and depends on your preferences.

Spool & Retrieval Rate

In the 5wt size, the Sage Trout features a 3.2” maximum diameter, a spool width of 0.9”, and a 1.9” arbor diameter. These measurements equate to about 6.8” of line retrieval per turn, making this a mid-range performer compared to other premium freshwater reels. We’d consider this the higher end of mid-arbor reels, and the lower end of true large-arbor reels. If maximum line pickup is important to you, there are likely better options. But if line retrieval rate is secondary to weight balance, full-cage design, and aesthetics, then the Sage Trout could be a winner.

Looks & Ergonomics

The aesthetics of the Sage Trout are one of its best features. This sturdy-looking reel pays homage to classic trout reels with its circular porting and compact size. Offered in two classy color options - bronze and silver, it features a hard-anodized finish that will stand the test of time and abuse. Ergonomically, we appreciate the Trout’s large and grippy drag knob and spool release knob. The reel handle is a bit narrow but still adequate for freshwater fishing. Overall the Sage Trout earns points for its looks and functionality.

Warranty

As of 2024 every new Sage series reel purchased from an authorized dealer comes with an original-owner warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Repair fees can vary depending on the model and age of the product.

Price: $400.00

Conclusion

The Sage Trout fly reel combines heritage design elements with modern functionality and performance. While this isn’t a high-performance reel in categories like line retrieval and weight, it compensates with its ability to balance longer rods and its full-cage design. The one major downside to this overseas build is its steep price of $400. For roughly the same price, anglers can find US-made reels with very similar performance in today’s market, such as the Ross Animas and the Orvis Mirage LT. Overall, the Sage Trout is a sturdy, handsome reel with a solid drag ready to meet the demands of trout fishing anglers with a higher budget.
