Dark gray machined aluminum Redington Zero 4/5 fly reel with ventilated spool and skeletonized design

Redington has long been known to produce functional products for a reasonable price, and the Redington Zero fly reel certainly lives up to that philosophy. The Zero is a featherweight click-and-pawl reel that gives anglers a great budget option in today’s market. Although it may not be the highest-performing freshwater reel in some categories, the Zero will please many creek junkies and weight-conscious backcountry anglers alike. Read on to learn more about this cool trout reel from Redington.

Weight

Weighing in at 2.95 ounces, the Redington Zero is extremely lightweight. By comparison, the Galvan Brookie weighs in at 3.2 ounces, and the Ross Colorado is 3.5 ounces. If bluelining small streams with shorter, lightweight rods is your thing, the Zero would be an excellent choice.

Drag

This is a click-and-pawl reel, so there isn’t a drag, or even a click-tension adjustment for that matter. Fortunately, the click tension should be enough to avoid any backlash for the most part.

Sound

The Redington Zero produces a very audible sound on both the incoming and the outgoing retrieve. The two sounds are differentiated, but neither is our favorite. Of course, sound preference is subjective; however, we found the reel's sound to be quite metallic, which may not appeal to everyone.

Spool & Retrieval Rate

The Zero features a 3” maximum diameter, a 1” width, and a 1.9” arbor, which picks up a moderate 6.8” of line per revolution. This isn’t the highest line pickup of click-and-pawl reels, a title which is held by the Sage Click at 9” of line per turn. But at a fraction of the price, this is solid performance for what we’d consider to be a medium arbor spool.

Looks & Ergonomics

The Redington Zero boasts a sturdy appearance with its ultra-ported design available in four matte colors: Burgundy, Avocado, Grey, and Black. Unfortunately, this is a die-cast reel, so its painted finish won’t stand abuse like a machined anodized reel will. There is a convenient spool release button in the center of the spool, which is a bit small but handy for quick spool changes. The reel handle is a bit stubby, but it also serves its purpose.

Warranty

As of 2024, every new Redington series reel purchased from an authorized dealer comes with an original-owner warranty, covering defects in materials and workmanship. Repair fees can vary depending on the model and age of the product.

Price: $109.99

Conclusion

The Redington Zero is a great option for blueliners on a budget. This is an extremely lightweight reel, which makes it ideal for creek fishing with light rods, or backpacking trips where shaving every ounce is helpful. Additionally, its line retrieval is pretty solid for the price point, especially when you consider how infrequently you’ll need quick line pickup for most creek fishing scenarios. Overall, the Redington Zero offers some excellent features for budget-minded freshwater anglers.
