Tying up three dozen Perdigons for your week-long trip out west or finishing up your spinner box for every spinner fall that you’ll encounter this season, you can always rely on Whiting’s Coq De Leon Tailing Pack to tie flies with the perfect tail. Coq De Leon feathers are quite unique and have excellent stiffness with a naturally mottled and speckled appearance, this makes them the ideal choice whether tying dry flies, spinners, or nymphs–specifically Euro nymphs. Each pack of Whiting’s Coq De Leon Tailing Pack is hand-selected with high-quality feathers, and these packs include two patches of feathers in order to give the tier everything necessary to tie a range of fly sizes–broad color options from Whiting also allow the tier to dial their patterns in just how they like.
Uses
With their stiff characteristics, the feathers on Whiting’s Coq De Leon Tailing Pack make a great choice for tying tails on dry flies–especially adult mayflies and spinners. However, these fibers are also a popular choice when tying Euro nymph patterns like the Perdigon, and the feathers can be worked into tails and/or fins on streamers just as easily.
Comparisons
The feathers found on Whiting’s Coq De Leon Predator Pack are pretty unique, and while something like Keough’s Full Grade Grizzly Saddle would afford the tier a similar range of feathers, they’re not going to be exactly like those found on the Coq De Leon Predator Pack. While Keough’s Full Grade Grizzly Saddle will have some great feathers for tying large streamer patterns, there will be an assortment of skinny feathers that are more suited to tying dry flies, where the feathers on Whiting’s Coq De Leon Predator Pack tend to be a little wider and rounder, providing more profile to larger flies. Another difference is that with Whiting’s Coq De Leon Predator Pack you get two half capes and two different colors, while Keough’s Grizzly Saddle only comes in one color option. Both of these saddles are excellent additions to any tier’s desk, but if you want the natural look and webbier feathers, it’s best to go with Whiting’s Coq De Leon Predator Pack.
