While most of us may think of Euro nymphs and slim dry flies whenever Coq De Leon gets brought up, Whiting’s Coq De Leon Predator Pack provides long feathers that let you think about large predatory flies. Whiting’s Coq De Leon Predator Pack comes with two half capes, giving the tier with two different colors, and the feathers found on these capes are super durable with lifelike movement and a natural sheen. Whether you’re palmering one of these feathers on a massive Seaducer or tying up some big articulated streamers to cast at members of the esox family, the feathers on the Coq De Leon Predator Pack are tough to beat when you’re looking to chuck meat.
Uses
With their stiff characteristics, the feathers on Whiting’s Coq De Leon Tailing Pack make a great choice for tying tails on dry flies–especially adult mayflies and spinners. However, these fibers are also a popular choice when tying Euro nymph patterns like the Perdigon, and the feathers can be worked into tails and/or fins on streamers just as easily.
Comparisons
If you’re just looking for stiff fibers to tie dry fly tails, then Hareline’s Mayfly Tails are an excellent substitute. While these fibers are synthetic, they do shed water easily and provide all of the rigidity and color options needed to balance your dry flies and match the hatch. On the other hand, if you’re looking for tailing materials for nymphs, there isn’t really another feather out there with the stiffness and color options found in Coq De Leon. Hareline’s India Hen Back patches provide a similar look, but the feathers are much more webby, so depending on what you’re tying, this may or may not be a suitable substitute. And finally, Whiting’s Coq De Leon Mayfly Tailing Pack offers nearly the exact feathers found on the Coq De Leon Tailing Pack, but one important note to make is that the Coq De Leon Mayfly Tailing Pack tends to have stiffer and smaller fibers than those found on Whiting’s regular Coq De Leon Tailing Pack, so if you want to tie larger flies, the standard Coq De Leon Tailing Pack is a better choice.
