It sinks like a rock, it’s a large protein-rich meal, and it looks darn close to a natural stonefly, the Tungsten Rolling Stone Fly is a nymph that just might lure those large trout out of their hole. Tied on a curved hook, this fly closely imitates the body shape of a dislodged stonefly struggling through the current. To match the naturals, this fly is tied in both black and gold color variations, and both colors feature rubber leg tails, a segmented body, prominent wing pads, rubber legs and antennae, and two tungsten beads in the thorax that make it sink quickly and roll on the bottom as few other flies can.
The Tungsten Rolling Stone Fly is a fly that you can get away with fishing in large sizes like 6 and 8 and it’s a great choice when fishing fast, oxygenated waters that stoneflies love. This fly can be fished all year long, but large stoneflies are especially effective in the dead of winter whenever trout are looking for those large meals that require limited effort. Equally effective fished as a standalone nymph or a point fly in a multi-nymph rig, the Tungsten Rolling Stone Fly is a realistic stonefly that should always have a spot in the nymph box.
