When you’re looking to fool picky trout that are gorging themselves on tiny midges, the Top Secret Midge Fly is one that you should have at the ready. Created by Pat Dorsey of Evergreen, Colorado, the Top Secret Midge gets its name from a “secret” and unconventional material that Pat uses to form the wing, and while it looks like a lot of materials that you might find on the wall of a fly shop, Pat feels that it gives an extra touch that other materials just can’t match. Designed with a segmented thread body, dubbed thorax, and that special wing material, this fly does a fine job at representing most midge pupae, and it’s a great choice whenever you see the adults emerging from the water.

A solid midge pupa imitation, this fly excels when fished above the bottom of the water and even greased and fished right in the surface film. Because midges are an important food source all year long, this is a fly that can live in your box 24/7/365, but it definitely pays to have the Top Secret Midge ready for late fall into early spring whenever the larger insects are more dormant and midges take the shine. Large tailwaters, tiny spring creeks, and even classic freestone streams, the Top Secret Midge should always be on hand in sizes 20-24.
