Whether you’re looking to enhance the classic Pheasant Tail Nymph or make your nymphs just a little bit more bold, the Spirit River UV2 Ringneck Pheasant Tail is an excellent choice. These male ringneck pheasant tail feathers are great quality and have a natural appearance that can be used to match a variety of different insects. To increase visibility, these feathers are also processed with Spirit River’s UV2 double-dye treatment that displays UVF (ultraviolet fluorescence) and UVR (ultraviolet reflectance) ultraviolet wavelengths. Spirit River’s UV2 Ringneck Pheasant Tails are a staple on all tier’s desks and can be used for a variety of different tying applications ranging from legs, wingcases, and much more.

Uses

Pheasant Tail fibers are one of those materials that can be used in almost any type of fly. These fibers are most commonly known for tying nymph legs, tails, and wingcases, but they can do much more. Whether you want to knot them to create a set of realistic grasshopper legs, tie a long tail on a Hex pattern, palmer it to create a segmented and natural abdomen on a nymph, wet fly, or emerger, or just use it as antennae on a stonefly, Pheasant Tail does it all.

Comparisons

While Spirit River’s UV2 Ringneck Pheasant Tail can be compared to Pheasant Tail that lacks Spirit River’s UV2 dye, there are other different materials that are comparable. One of the most commonly compared feathers is Turkey Tail Feathers. Like Pheasant Tail, Turkey Tails have natural coloring and sport long fibers that can be tied in as tails, legs, and can even be palmered just like a Pheasant Tail. However, Turkey Tails tend to have a little webbier fibers that aren’t nearly as fine as the fibers on a Pheasant Tail. Both are great materials, but Pheasant Tail fibers tend to have a little more versatility when tying a range of flies and fly sizes.

Example Flies

While Ringneck Pheasant Tail Feathers can be used for a wealth of different flies and tying uses, these are some of the most popular patterns that use these feathers:

  • Pheasant Tail Nymph
  • Dave’s Hopper
  • Pheasant Tail Soft Hackle
  • Pheasant Tail Dry Fly
