Spirit River’s UV2 Large Eyed Guinea Feathers are beautifully marked and a pleasure to work with whether you’re filling the swinging box for steelhead or working on some small nymphs. With their webby yet somewhat stiff fibers, Guinea Feathers provide characteristics that few other feathers offer, and they give a stunning appearance when used to wrap collars on streamers and steelhead/salmon flies. Spirit River has dyed their Large Eyed Guinea Feathers in a range of colors--all equipped with their UV2 technology, which is a double-dye dying process that displays UVF (ultraviolet fluorescence) and UVR (ultraviolet reflectance) wavelengths--so that you can easily add a bold look to any pattern in your box.

Uses

Guinea Feathers are pretty versatile and have a range of uses. These feathers are commonly used to create collars on steelhead/salmon flies as well as streamers and wet flies. However, they’re also a solid choice for tying legs and tails on nymphs and wet flies. The crafty tier can also burn these feathers to make interesting and realistic eyes on classic streamer flies.

Comparisons

Guinea Feathers are a feather with a marking that no other feather really has, and because of this, there’s no great comparison. If you’re really looking for a Guinea substitute, Teal Flank Feathers have a somewhat similar appearance and are also webby, but it’s best to just go with Guinea Feathers.

Example Flies

These feathers can be used in a variety of different ways, but a few of the most common flies that use Guinea Feathers are:

  • Tellico Nymph
  • Sculpzilla
  • Intruder
