Trash to some, a treasure to others, no matter what you consider it, it’s hard to deny that the San Juan Worm Fly just plain works. The San Juan Worm Fly was initially designed for fishing the San Juan River in New Mexico where small red bloodworms are a common source of food, but since it was first tied, this fly has been known to catch trout (and the occasional bass, carp, and panfish) just about anywhere you find them. A perfect imitation for both aquatic and terrestrial worms, the San Juan Worm is an excellent searching pattern, and it’s an especially effective fly when fished after a rainstorm whenever the water’s dirty and the “garden hackle” has been flushed into waterways.
A simple fly by design but one that packs a powerful punch, the San Juan Worm consists of nothing more than thread and chenille, but this little fly is a great worm imitation. The San Juan Worm should be fished like a nymph, either under an indicator, on a tight line, or as a part of a multi-nymph rig. Carry the San Juan Worm anywhere you’re headed in sizes 10-14, and you just might be shocked at how often this fly saves the day.
