Swinging your favorite Intruder-style fly into the face of a freshly-run steelhead or picking apart every inch of a deep pool for Atlantics on the Cascapedia, regardless of the anadromous situation you find yourself in, Sage’s all-new Spey II Fly Reel has you covered. Designed around modern performance that leans on the back of traditional construction, the Spey II combines a fully redesigned sealed carbon disc and dual-clicker drag system with a timeless appearance and harmonics that are as aurally pleasing as it gets. Made for use with two-hand rods, Sage equips their Spey II with all of the convenience features you need–from its full-cage design that prevents thin shooting lines from slipping to a slightly offset foot to give better and more uniform axial balance to your setup, this reel is the perfect tool whenever you’re looking to swing for tough customers. Sage makes the Spey II with a clean look that has classic porting and a straightforward design in subdued colors; three different sizes, covering rods weighted 5 through 10, give the angler an option whether they’re tackling small grilse salmon or conquering true heavyweights like kings and Atlantics.
Design
Large Arbor Spey Reel Design - Built around use with two-hand rods–from full Spey rods to shorter Switch rods–the Spey II was created to balance these longer rods and make for reliable performance while on the water. With its full-cage build, this reel prevents line slip when managing the amount of line necessary to bomb long-distance casts. Minimal porting and a large arbor design merge to give the perfect weight and balance for nearly any two-hand rod out there.
Materials
Machined Aluminum - Sage makes their Spey II Reels for years and years of tough use. Winter steelhead, spring salmon, and fall-run browns, the Spey II stands up to it all through its durable machined aluminum build. This design choice offers excellent durability while maintaining the perfect weight and balance, allowing you to pair it with a range of different two-hand rod types and lengths.
Drag
Sealed Carbon Drag System - Sage builds their Spey II series of reels with their Sealed Carbon Drag System (SCS). A drag system that’s smooth, reliable, and has ample stopping power, the SCS Drag is made with top-notch Carbon Drag Discs, and each reel is hand-calibrated for peak performance. Sage also makes operating this drag system about as easy as it gets–simply turn the large single-revolution drag knob to your preferred setting and you’re ready to go. But how do I know exactly what my preferred setting is? Well, Sage makes that easy and intuitive with their quick-to-read numbered settings and audible clicks–gone are the days of finding yourself in a jam whenever you’ve got a hot fish on the end of the line.
Materials
Sage’s Spey II incorporates high-quality Carbon Drag Discs and the use of larger O-Rings than what was previously used, increasing durability and reliability in the seal. Using these materials makes for a well-sealed system that gives you all of the stopping power you need and a drag that’s as smooth as they come.
Arbor Size
Large Arbor - We all know that few fish are hotter and faster than a chromed-out steelhead, and whenever they’re making that first downstream run right at you after a blazing upstream run, you need a reel that can quickly pick up line and keep things tight. The Large Arbor construction of the Spey II Reel does just that. Solid line pickup meets a smooth drag to ensure that you’re ready for any anadromous fish that comes your way–add in an ergonomic reel handle and the Spey II sets you up for success in every outing.
Warranty
Sage Warranty - As of January 2023, Sage’s Spey II Reels are covered by their original owner warranty against defects in materials or workmanship. This warranty is limited to the replacement or repair of your reel, and whether your reel is replaced or repaired will be decided at Sage’s discretion. The warranty on the Spey II does not cover things like theft, customization, damage done by fire, or intentional damage, nor does it cover consequential, indirect, direct, or any incidental damage caused by the use of the product. In situations where the warranty doesn’t apply to your reel’s issue, Sage will charge a $50 fee for repair.
