Sage 4200 Fly Reel 1

The Sage 4200 fly reel offers a high performance, sealed drag system for an exceptional price. With its combination of traditional drag system and lightweight design, the reel offers the best of both worlds.

The high-tech one-revolution drag system makes the Sage 4200 fly reel stand out in this price bracket. The disc drag system is reliable and designed to offer smooth performance, while a clutch bearing is also used for immediate activation.

The drag system makes it easy to change settings quickly and also allows for precise alterations – an essential feature for a top end fly reel. If you need an affordable reel that matches the performance and versatility of more expensive options, the Sage 4200 is a great choice.

Sage 4200 fly reels are manufactured with strong aluminum for a durable and corrosion resistant design. The reels feature Sage's "floating tripod" drag system which is fully sealed to reduce maintenance. The sealed design also protects the system from the elements and creates a far more robust reel.

The Sage 4200 fly is available with line weights from 3 to 10 depending on your chosen application. You can choose between platinum, black and bead blast bronze finishes.

Other features of the Sage 4200 fly reel include an easy system for switching between left and right retrieve and an ergonomic handle. The handle size is also matched to the reel size. Sage 4200 fly reels come with a neoprene storage case.

Sage 4200 Fly Reel Reviews

Overall Pretty Good Review by A-ROB
Posted on 11/26/16
This is one of the lightest reels on the market. It has a strong, smooth drag and looks great IMO. You can catch a small diameter tippet between the spool and frame on occasion, but that is a minor complaint. And it seems that you must keep it greased more than my other reels or it will start to grind a bit. But once you learn these idiosyncrasies, I'm sure you'll really like this reel.
My Go-To Reel Review by Cam

I love these reels! I have the 4260 on my 6 wt, the 4280 on my 5 wt switch rod, and the 4210 on my 10 wt. I've never had a problem with the drag skipping or being weak and it makes a great clicking sound. I would say the only down side of this reel is the non-quick release spool. It doesn't take too long to switch out the spool but it's not quickest.

Also I've never heard this mentioned before and this is personal experience but I believe that the larger reels have stronger drag than the smaller sizes. The 4210 has very very powerful drag.
4230 and 4250 Review by Colt
Posted on 7/4/16
I purchased the 4250 six months ago to put it on my 5 weight Sage One. First thing I noticed was how light the reel is. It balances the 9 foot rod very well and the drag is tough and the dial works well. I liked it so much I got the 4230 to go on my 4 weight 8'6'' rods and it doesn't disappoint. Typical Sage quality.
giving it as a gift. Review by Jeff

A good friend and rod builder in Wyo, JC McNeel recommended the Sage 4250. I am very pleased to afix it to a gift pole that JC is building for a friend and can't wait to give it to him for Christmas. The backing and line went on smoothly and it is a great looking outfit paired with a custom Sage Rod by JC
A Reel Workhorse Review by Lucas

From the 4230 to the 4210, this reel is a staple in my gear closet. I have yet to find a situation where one of the 4200 reels doesn't cover my needs. The 4210 is a great Spey reel on 7 & 8-wt. rods, and it's equally at home on my Pike and Musky rods. The 4250 covers all of my trout fishing needs, and where those are a little heavy I've got a few of the 4230s for light-line applications.

If you're looking for a workhorse reel that will serve you well no matter what, then look no further. Every reel in this series is incredibly smooth, lightweight, and very, very dependable. You won't go wrong!
Light Weight Review by TenaciousP

I already reviewed the 4210 I use on a 7wt Spey rod. I just recently picked up the 4250 for a 6wt single hander (sage VXP). I grabbed the bronze, the color combo is pretty incredible. Anyway, back to the reel. As mentioned in previous reviews, the drag is very smooth and easy to dial in every time on the water. The thing that really surprised me about the 4250 is how light it is. The size is perfect also. This is a good size for 6wt but would be fine on a 5wt also.
Sage 4250 stealth Review by Scott

I pair this reel up with my Scott Radian and they look fantastic. The reel is smooth and precise and mechanically sound. The only thing I do not like about it is the drag knob I am use to a round knob for easier adjustment, but it is a minor problem that I will get use to.
Quailty drag Review by TenaciousP

I use the 4210 on 7wt Spey rod. The reel holds a good amount of backing/grip shooter/skagit short. It has tight tolerances and has operated flawlessly after a few falls. It is easy to clean. The drag knob is easy to set to your favorite tension every time. Chrome time! TIP: don't worry about the "press on" spool connection, it stay in place! I have several Sage reels.

Been using mine in the dark mousing for big browns. Believe it or not I landed a 15 beaver with it! Perfect drag helped with that.
