Named after its ability to catch fish even when a blind person is doing the angling, the Ray Charles Fly is an effective choice whether you’re on a western tailwater or tiny limestone stream. Born on the Bighorn River as a sowbug imitation, the Ray Charles Fly has a buggy ostrich herl body with a ribbed flashback shellback and is tied in colors to match the naturals. Simple yet deadly, this fly is a great choice anywhere that scuds and sowbugs call home, especially those streams thick with aquatic vegetation, and don’t be shy about using this bug as a searching pattern either.

A fly that can be fished 365 days a year, the Ray Charles is a solid pattern when nymphing and works well in small sizes like 16 and 18. When fishing the Ray Charles, it’s important to keep your fly on the bottom of the water and this is often a great choice as a trailing nymph in a multi-bug setup.
