Whether you’re kicking up sand trying to find the elusive permit or scooting across a mudflat in pursuit of opportunistic striped bass, the Rag Head Crab gets the job done. Originally tied by Jan Isley for pursuing permit in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, this fly has proven itself as a saltwater staple anytime you’re looking to drag the bottom. Tied to imitate a variety of crabs and ride with its hook point up, this fly utilizes marabou and hackles, a synthetic body, rubber legs, and heavy dumbbell eyes. Quick to sink to the bottom, this fly allows you to get into those tricky areas, and when it’s resting on the water’s bottom, the claws point upward, only enhancing the realism.
The Rag Head Crab can be fished anytime crabs are in the water, which will be from the end of spring through fall in the northeast and all year long in those warm to tropical environments. Equally effective fished as a general searching pattern or cast into crab-rich areas, the Rag Head benefits from a varied stripped retrieve with the occasional pause. Casting into mangroves or working the mouth of a tidal river, the Rag Head is always a great place to start.
