Charlie Craven’s Poison Tung was developed around the color blue. Blue shows up well to fish feeding in deeper water and this simple fly pattern capitalizes on that fact. A gray Ice Dub head imitates an emerging midge and the slim profile creates a lifelike profile in the water. This is a great pattern for tricky tailwaters and clear, clean spring creeks when trout have seen the same flies over and over again. Changing color slightly with a fly and a profile these fish see and eat often makes a huge difference. The small fly is incredibly durable and holds up well over multiple river outings. It’s a great pattern to fish under an indicator on fine tippet or as part of a Euro nymph rig when water type permits. This fly is also a great trout pattern for lakes and stillwater fisheries during the winter when insect life is at a minimum and trout cruise looking for midges and other small meals.Â
