A variation of Leonard Halladay’s famous Adams Dry Fly, the Parachute Adams Dry Fly is an effective choice whenever you want your Adams to ride a little lower in the water and permit better visibility and buoyancy. Initially tied as a general mayfly imitation, the Parachute Adams features a calf tail wing with a parachute tied hackle that rides evenly in the water, and while this fly wasn’t designed to match any specific insect, its grey body makes for a great imitation of anything from a Slate Drake, a Blue Quill, and even a small Blue Winged Olive if you need a representation in a pinch.
The Parachute Adams is a dry fly that comes in a variety of sizes so that you can choose just what you need for the insects that you’re matching, but if you’re looking for an attractor pattern, you might want to choose a larger size like a 12 or 14--the buoyant calf tail wing also allows these larger parachutes to work well whenever you want to prospect with a dry dropper rig. The Parachute Adams can be presented like most other dry flies, and a drag-free upstream or downstream drift is most effective; though, this fly can be a reliable choice on stillwater lakes and ponds all the same. A fly that works equally well being tossed into fast freestone waters for native Brook Trout as it does slow water Brown Trout, the Parachute Adams is a fly that you’ll want a variety of in your dry fly box from March to the end of November.
