The Mercury RS2 is a simple, effective emerger pattern that works well in shallow riffles, transition areas, or drop-offs. When mayflies begin to hatch, this fly can be extremely productive when fished to trout feeding in a variety of settings. The small wing and short tail maintain a lifelike profile in the water and fool trout that are eating PMDs or BWO-Baetis emergers. This small midge-like pattern can also be productive in winter months when midges are hatching and moving up in the water column. This is a great fly to use as a dropper off of a dry fly during a hatch, as a single nymph in shallow sight fishing conditions, or as a trailer nymph on a double nymph rig when subsurface fishing. The glass bead and flashback help add a small amount of weight and flash to the fly and contribute to the small, simple profile of the fly in the water. This is a great pattern when targeting trout in the western US or wherever midges and small mayflies are present.
