The Mercury Black Beauty is a simple midge nymph with some added ribbing to increase durability/weight and a glass bead to create a lifelike midge profile. This is a great winter fly when trout are feeding on small midges because bug action is limited on many rivers. Across the US and beyond, midges hatch in large numbers but anglers like to focus on larger bugs. Truth is, in many fly fishing scenarios, a highly picky trout will eat a well-presented midge. Tied by Umpqua Signature Tyer Pat Dorsey, a native of Colorado, this is truly a fly for the picky tailwater trout. Fish this fly under an indicator with another midge pattern or as part of a dry-dropper when fish are looking up. Available in size 20 and 22, plan on digging out your 6x or 7x tippet for these flies.
