When fish are keyed in on mid sized herring, it is important to be able to ‚match the hatch‚ even in the salt, and the Major Herring Fly lets you mimic these wide-bodied baitfish with ease. The Major Herring Fly was designed by Thomas Kintz to fool striped bass blitzing on herring. Thomas set out to make a fly with a wide profile that could cast easily and didnt hold water. After some tinkering around, he found out that he could use bucktail as a support system to prop Polar FIbre and create that wide body that doesnt collapse in the water. Once he found the missing link, Thomas put the Major Herring Fly to the test and was immediately satisfied with the results.
Herring are a prevalent baitfish and they feed most Atlantic saltwater species, and whenever they make their annual migration from saltwater into freshwater systems to spawn in the spring, theyre easy pickings. This is a great time to bust out the Major Herring Fly, but the Major Herring Fly is also a fine searching pattern. Fish it on the open ocean, cast off of a jetty, fish a river mouth, the list continues and the Major Herring Fly can keep up with everything you throw it is way.
