When To Go

The fishing season at Madison Double R is from March through October. The early season, in March and April, is the pre-runoff period, and can see excellent Blue-Winged Olive and caddis hatches. Generally, there is very little fishing pressure during this time, offering solitude, but with unpredictable weather conditions. The start of the summer season from May through June is the runoff period and typically sees higher flows and off-color water. However, the famed salmonfly hatch occurs in June, with prolific numbers of jumbo stoneflies bringing trophy trout to the surface. If timed correctly, the early season offers some of the best dry fly fishing of the year. During the summer months of July and August, the river offers medium flows, consistent caddis and mayfly hatches, terrestrial fishing with foamy hoppers, and warm days. Dry-dropper fishing is common in the summer, targeting plump trout in riffles and pocket water. September brings the autumn season and offers anglers lower flows, cooler temperatures, and exciting streamer fishing.

Rainbow Trout

The wild Rainbow Trout of the Madison River are known for their vigor and stamina, fueled by the river’s healthy aquatic insect population. The rainbows here are often found in quick riffles and runs feeding on nymphs and emergers. Your expert guides will know the hot spots for targeting these beautiful trout, which can range in size from 10 inches to over 20 inches.

Brown Trout

The Madison River features healthy populations of wild brown trout which can range in size from 10 inches to well over 25 inches. Although anglers can target browns using a variety of techniques, the biggest fish are typically caught fishing streamer patterns in the fall.

Boats

At the Madison Double R, you’ll be fishing out of Western-style drift boats. These are the quintessential river craft in Montana and offer rod storage, dry hatches, and lean braces.

Equipment

Successful fishing on the Madison River only requires a couple of rods with matching reels. We recommend bringing 2 rods: a 9’ 5wt for dry flies, and a 9’ 6wt for nymphing and streamers. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.

Accommodations

Madison Double R features two lodging styles for guests:

Five spacious creekside cabins provide simple luxury in a very private setting. With views that look out over a beautiful meadow ringed by towering cottonwoods, it's not uncommon to see an abundance of incredible wildlife. Each cabin features two queen beds, oversized showers, soaking bathtubs, cozy fireplaces, flat panel TVs, hardwood floors, outdoor cedar decks, and small kitchenettes. Additionally, each Creekside Cabin has a 4-person golf cart, as well as a pair of mountain bikes, to make getting around the lodge property a breeze.

Two 1700 square foot, 2-bedroom mountain view cabins are perfect for those who want a bit more space or for larger groups. Sleeping up to 8 guests comfortably, the mountain view Cabins are ideal for up to 4 couples, 8 friends, or a sprawling single-occupancy option. Each of the 4 guest rooms have 2 queen beds, oversized showers, a soaking tub, hardwood floors, a fireplace, a flat panel TV, attractive shared living rooms, a huge cedar deck, and a kitchenette. The prevailing views of the Madison Range are jaw-dropping! Like the creekside cabins, each mountain view cabin has a 4-person golf cart and a pair of mountain bikes for guest use during their stay.

The 3500 square foot main lodge consists of two pods connected with an outdoor terrace. The lounge portion of the Main Lodge features a full bar with premium wines, beers, and spirits, a stack-rock fireplace, two TVs, and an outdoor covered fireplace porch with stunning views where hors d'oeuvres are served as the sun dips below the horizon.

In the other half, the spacious dining room boasts massive windows with views across the pond and meadows, and views of the mountains in the other direction. And for much of the summer, the windows slide aside for an immersive outdoor dining experience.

In addition to the cabins and the main lodge, the property has a gift shop, a game room with shuffleboard and billiards, and a 1000-square-foot exercise gym.
