Who It’s For

  • Trout anglers
  • Families, couples, and corporate groups

When To Go

Krka River Lodge operates during the prime fly fishing season in Slovenia, from March through October. This period offers anglers the best conditions to target Trout and Grayling, with wadable flows and predictable insect activity.

For those interested in pursuing the elusive Huchen, the fishing season extends from November to February, providing a unique winter angling experience.

Marble Trout

Slovenia is one of the few places in the world that the Marble Trout calls home. This beautiful fish can only be found in a few drainages and rivers of the Adriatic, including the Soca River and Idrijca River in Slovenia. This coveted bucket list fish has a distinctive marbled color pattern of varying shades, usually olive green and brown with pale yellow or olive belly. The typical size is 12-20 inches, but larger specimens are often visible in clear waters. Their affinity for crystal clear water can make them challenging even for veteran anglers, often requiring long leaders and delicate presentations.

Brown Trout

Brown Trout are abundant in most Slovenia rivers and are active day and night. While Brown Trout can grow quite large, 16 inches is a typical catch in Slovenia. This staple fish ranges in color from largely silver with relatively few spots and a white belly, to a golden color that fades to a creamy white belly, with medium-sized spots surrounded by lighter halos. Dries, nymphs, wets, and streamers are all employed when targeting the beautiful Brown Trout of Slovenia.

Grayling

Grayling is an absolute joy to target with light tackle. There are two types found in Slovenian waters. The "common" grayling inhabits rivers in the central and eastern parts of Slovenia and can grow up to 20 inches long. The type found in the Soča River and its tributaries in western Slovenia is unique to Adriatic waters, averaging 10–18 inches in length. Though small in stature, their tall dorsal fin gives them big character. The Soča River variety is typically grayish-yellow with a dark tail. Grayling can be caught using a variety of techniques, including dry flies, nymphing, and even wet flies.

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout are a perennial favorite amongst anglers in Slovenia. This non-native species is a great fighter and can often provide several acrobatic leaps. They range in size from 12 inches to well over 20 inches, and are abundant in most rivers in Slovenia. Rainbows are typically blue-green or olive green with heavy black spotting over the length of the body and a signature reddish lateral stripe stretching from the gills to the tail. Anglers can find success targeting rainbows using a myriad of techniques from dries and droppers to swinging wets and streamers.

Huchen

The mighty Huchen, also known as the Danube Salmon, is a rare fish that can only be found in the Danube River and its tributaries. This predatory salmonid can grow to well over 4 feet, with an average size between 25 and 40 inches. A true bucket list fish, the Huchen is a challenging catch, often requiring big flies and sinking lines at low light to temp them to eat. As many veteran anglers in Slovenia will attest, catching a Huchen is a lifetime angling achievement that few even know exists.

Equipment

Although Krka River Lodge can provide all the fishing equipment needed, some anglers prefer to bring their own gear. If you’d like to bring your own rods, we recommend bringing a 9’ 5wt all-purpose rod, a 10’ 3wt for euro nymphing, and a 9’ 6wt for streamers. Your guides will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.
