With an ability to attract trout like a kid to an ice cream truck, the Ice Cream Cone Chironomid Fly is a chironomid pattern that should be on-hand whether you’re on Henry’s Lake or just your local stocked pond. A simple design that does a fine job at matching Stillwater chironomids, the Ice Cream Cone Chironomid features a thread body, ribbing for segmentation, and a bead that makes for quick sinking that matches the gills of the naturals. A range of sizes also allows you to really match the chironomids in your area, but something like a 12 or 14 is a good place to start when unsure.

The Ice Cream Cone Chironomid can be fished in a variety of ways, whether you choose to implement a sinking line or tip and strip it back to shore, a floating line with a slow hand twist retrieve, or even under an indicator waiting for cruising trout, this is a fly that’s proven to be effective.
