Andrew Grillos calls this pattern ‘a giant foam Humpy’. It’s a hybrid attractor pattern that’s really meant to be fished as a beetle but doubles as a hopper/general terrestrial pattern. This is a highly visible fly which makes it easy, efficient, and fun to fish.
Â
Foam, High-Floating, Dry Fly - The Hippie Stomper is a compact, foam-based dry fly with a hackle wing/underbody, a deer hair tail, and rubber legs. The Hippie Stomper also features a Salmon hook that differentiates this fly from a Humpy, Chubby Chernobyl, and others.
Â
Dry Fly River, Lake Fishing - A pattern that was originally designed to be fished in Patagonia and South America, the Hippie Stomper is first and foremost a beetle pattern. This fly can be used beyond South America, however, and works well in the Western US, on small streams throughout the country, and as an attractor pattern pretty much anywhere trout are present.
Â
Hoppers, Beetles, Ants - This is a beetle fly but can also be used to imitate other terrestrials. Available in a variety of colors and sizes, this is a great pattern for small streams, larger rivers, Stoneflies, beetles, and hoppers.
Â
Trout - As you’ve probably gathered, this is a trout fly designed for fishing in rivers, streams, lakes, and freshwater environments. This isn’t a saltwater fly and should be used only when targeting trout that are feeding on the surface or fish that are likely to rise for a large meal.
