There’s a reason the Hare’s Ear is such a popular pattern across the US west and beyond. This attractor nymph is highly effective for the angler who doesn’t know a particular piece of water and can’t glean any information from hatching insects. Trout eat this fly as a mayfly nymph, stonefly nymph, and really any other ‘general’ nymph that’s prevalent and available in a river system. This is a great pattern to fish under an indicator using a ‘double nymph rig’ technique or on its own as a single nymph. It can also be used as a dropper off of a large dry fly like the Chubby Chernobyl. Several different sizes allow anglers to fish the Guide’s Choice Hare’s Ear on larger rivers or smaller streams. This pattern can also be swung as a wet fly to imitate an emerging insect. The functions of this fly are truly endless. Every guide (and angler) should have a thorough selection of these in his/her box.
