Who It’s For
When To Go
Grosvenor Lodge operates from June through September. Early season, from June through mid-July, offers excellent sight-fishing opportunities for large Rainbow Trout keyed into Salmon smolt in the Narrows and on American Creek. Additionally, Lake Trout and Northern Pike fishing can be excellent on the lakes during the early season. Mid-season, from mid-July through August, brings the Sockeye Salmon run to the various rivers and streams of the region. Anglers can choose to target hard-fighting Sockeyes or drift egg patterns for goliath Rainbows. September brings cooler temperatures and excellent opportunities for Rainbows, Lake Trout, and Pike. Any time of the season can offer fantastic fishing opportunities at Grosvenor. The best time of the season to fish here depends on the species you want to target!
Rainbow Trout
The Bristol Bay region of Alaska is well known for its hard-fighting, wild Rainbow Trout which can grow to over 30 inches. At Grosvenor, you’ll experience these amazing creatures firsthand in the lakes, rivers, and narrows surrounding the lodge. Techniques for targeting Rainbows can depend on the conditions and the time of the season. Common tactics include drifting dry flies, skating mice, swinging or stripping streamers, and nymphing.
Sockeye Salmon
The Grosvenor Lake region boasts one of the largest Sockeye Salmon runs in the world. Not only are these brightly red-colored Salmon fun to catch on a fly rod, but their smolt (juvenile salmon) creates an extremely abundant forage for Rainbow and Lake Trout. During the early season, the annual smolt run creates exciting sight-fishing into busting bait for huge Rainbows and Lakers. Some of the best opportunities for fishing the smolt run exists right at the Grosvenor Narrows, just steps away from the Lodge.
Dolly Varden & Arctic Char
Known for their vibrant coloration, Dolly Varden and Char are frequently caught in the rivers and lakes surrounding Grosvenor Lodge. These cousins of the Brook Trout offer anglers a beautiful and exciting by-catch during a week of fishing.
Lake Trout
Lake Trout, also known as Mackinaw, reside in Coville and Grosvenor Lakes adjacent to the lodge. The early season offers anglers the unique opportunity to target Lakers on the fly, as they hunt for smolt in shallower waters. During mid-season, the Lake Trout retreat to deeper waters in the lake to feed. In September, Lakers again become available to anglers as they return to shallow water to prepare for their autumn spawning cycle.
Northern Pike
Northern Pike make for an exciting fly rod target in Lake Coville and Lake Grosvenor. With their razor-sharp teeth, these ambush predators can grow to over 40 inches. Few angling experiences compare to watching a giant Pike turn and attack a large streamer pattern, often very close to your rod tip!
Equipment
Grosvenor Lodge can provide all the fishing equipment needed for a week of fishing, including rods, reels, waders & boots, and terminal tackle. For anglers choosing to bring their own equipment, we recommend bringing 3 rods with matching reels: a 9’ 6wt for dries and nymphing, a 9’ 7wt for nymphing and streamers, and a 9’ 8wt with a sinking line for streamers on the lakes. Your guide will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.
