Built to handle all of your spey casting techniques, from Russia to Canada and everywhere in between, Greys’ Kite Spey Rod is an excellent tool for delivering long casts and swinging flies. The Kite Spey Rod is made for sending flies long distances and handling tough fish like true Atlantic salmon and fresh-from-the-salt-steelhead. Crafted in line weights 8/9, 9/10, and 10/11 and ranging in length from 13’ all the way up to 15’, the Kite Spey offers a model for nearly anything you can pursue. With performance-focused features like a two-part handle design and a TOREON Blank, this medium-action spey rod makes two-handed casting nice and responsive while maintaining all of the power that you need to tame fresh fish. A truly versatile tool, Greys’ Kite Spey is a reliable choice whether you’re overhead casting at the mouth of a tidal river or working a stretch of water with a dense background of pine trees.
Blank
TOREON Blank- “Lighter, stronger, and more responsive” is exactly how Greys defines their TOREON blank technology, and while that statement leaves some pretty large shoes to fill, the Kite series of rods does it flawlessly. With their TOREON tech, Greys creates alternate dispersion within the resin and fibers of the blank in order to increase the control over Carbon Nano Tubes (CNTs). This process results in a 10%-20% improvement over standard fibre tech in areas like flexural strength, stiffness, and resistance to damage caused by external impacts.
For a timeless look that you’ll love seeing each time you bust this rod out for the annual salmon trip, Greys’ Kite Spey boasts a clean grey blank with accenting black thread wraps.
Guides
Lined Stripping Guides - The guides on the Kite Spey are lined in order to maximize your shootabilty and line speed–this is especially helpful when making those long casts that stretch across the entire length of the river, and the added durability is a plus whether you’re working a forested section of stream or hopping into a helicopter to hit the next river.
Single-Foot Snake Guides - For the rest of the blank, Greys utilizes Single-Foot Snake Guides. These guides reduce the weight of the blank while maintaining solid line speed in each cast.
Reel Seat
Alloy Reel Seat with Alloy Spacers - Lightweight, durable, and able to withstand salty environments, the Kite Spey is outfitted with an Alloy Reel Seat and Alloy Spacers. Greys also takes the less conventional approach with this reel seat and makes it with a dual down-locking construction, which locks your reel in securely all day long.
Rod Tube
The Kite Spey Rods come with a rod bag and hard tube that keeps things safe and sound whether you’re on the tarmac or driving down a remote logging trail.
Warranty
As of October 2022, Greys offers a lifetime warranty for their Kite Spey series. In order to be eligible for this warranty, you must register your rod within 60 days of ownership. This warranty requires a fee to process, and it will cover the repair or replacement (at Greys’ discretion) of your rod for things like damage or broken/defective sections.
