One of the most popular bonefish flies around, the Gotcha Fly is an essential bug whether you’re in the Florida Keys or the Bahamas. Designed by Jim McVay in preparation for a bonefish trip, the original Gotcha was a crudely tied fly sporting fibers from a Nassau taxi cab’s carpet, and despite its rough appearance, the fly caught fish. Over time, the Gotcha has been refined to include a diamond braid tail and body and the wing has since been replaced with craft fur accented with Krystal Flash.
Today, the Gotcha remains one of the top producing flies on the flats, and it’s one that imitates anything from small shrimp to tiny baitfish. An excellent-searching pattern whenever you’re not sure what the fish are keyed in on, the Gotcha is a fly that should be in your box whether you’re an expert bonefish angler or you’re making your first trip to the flats.
