NRX is the culmination of what we have been doing at G.Loomis since day one. We have been continually striving to build the best rod on the planet. Laminates, resin, mandrels, components and the know how you expect from us. These NRX rods look like nothing we have built before. They feel better than anything we have built before. We aren't talking about a little better here or a little lighter there...What we are saying so there is no confusion... " This is the Best Fly Rod Ever Built!" Period!!

G Loomis NRX Saltwater Fly Rod Reviews

9' 8 Weight Review Review by Cam
Posted on 11/2/16
The 8 weight 9fter will throw tight loops for distance but I think there are now better rods on the market at the 8 weight level.

Pros: Tight loops, great at 50-80 feet

Cons: Feels heavy/clubby compared to the Sage 890 X and Meridian. I don't care for the grip.

Notes: Needs a heavy reel to balance, rod has a soft tip stout base.

My budget typically requires that I shop for bargains. Fortunately there are some rods these days that are good performers at prices that I could manage. But when I splurged on my NRX 8 wt., I understood what the premium price can purchase! I can't change out all the lower price point rods, but ... I kinda wish I could.

The 9 weight is unreal. It's a verifiable cannon that can shoot line line no one's business. I am imagine this thing would rule the flats for whatever crosses your path - bonefish, permit, snook, etc. The only negative thing I can say about the rod is the design. It's freaking ugly! Also, the stripping guides are a little small. I imagine you would lose a bonefish or two due to this.

I can't say enough about the NRX! Incredibly light and does shoot like a cannon! This rod combined with a Nautilus NV-G is the ticket for a long day on the flats. The only minor negative is the small diameter of the stripping guides. The NRX enables you to power through the wind with accuracy. I bought the 8wt and liked it so much I ordered the 9wt too!
The Hype is Real Review by Joe

In similar fashion to the previous reviewers, I too am giving this Gary Loomis's masterpiece 5 stars.

Regardless the website, publication or local fly shop, the consensus and reviews on this rod are always the same...the NRX is an incredible rod.

Reading a review about this rod is a bit redundant...there's a reason you're choosing a NRX and it's because the rod lives up to the name. Similar to Rolls Royce, you don't need to read a Car & Driver review to know that the car is amazing.

I use my 8 wt in the salt, primarily for bones and around my local waters for bass/striper and larger trout. The rod is light and effortless to cast; but strength is not lost in lightweight design...the reserve strength through the butt is like a Howitzer, but the tip still has a soft feel like a small fiberglass rod.

The only problem is that you realize all of your other (non-NRX) rods are inferior.

The 8wt. is an absolute cannon. It will throw extremely tight loops a long ways with little effort. This is THE rod you are looking for. From bonefish to rainbows you won't be disappointed. Get it and you won't ever look for a better one.
Great Bonefish Rod! Review by Kurt

I love this rod! I like this rod so much I am buying it its own reel!
I use this rod for flats fishing . For me it is the perfect match of power and feel in a rod. It has plenty of backbone but still manages to have a soft delivery through the tip. I can manage tight loops without overpowering the rod allowing for some pretty soft casts for an 8 wt.
I am getting a Nautilus g8 to match with it, and I cant wait!
Tight Lines.

Great overall rod. Super-fast and well built. Don't buy this unless you want to be disappointed with all of your other rods...
Fantatic fishing tool - cosmetically disappointing Review by Richard

I love this rod. I've fished a lot of 8-weights for bonefish, redfish, stripers, and bluefish, and this is by far the best. It's a fast action rod that can throw a long way when you're blind-casting int eh surf, but it has a soft and responsive tip so you can make that delicate presentation to a tailing bonefish at 50 feet.

My only gripe is the cosmetics: I love the old skeleton reel seat on the CrossCurrent GLX, and the gorgeous olive gold colour of the fittings. The NRX has none of that, and it looks a lot more boring down at the butt end. I'm also not a fan of the single locking ring, and the cork on the handle isn't the greatest quality.

I can live with the cosmetics, though, because the rod is an unbeatable all-round 8-weight.

The Gloomis NRX fly rod is top of the line. The rod will make you better in every way. When it comes to casting, positioning, sensitivity, durability and quality this is the go to rod. I have the 8wt for steel head and love fishing for the big guys! Personally, I think it will be a while before this rod gets topped. ~Skinner
Formidable Review by Richard

Formidable. The 9" 8 wt. G. Loomis NRX is simply formidable. One word will serve to describe this rod: formidable. This is the only fly rod I have ever fished that is formidable. The reserve power of this rod has to be experienced to be believed. Formidable. There is simply nothing else like it. This is the only 8 wt. rod you will ever need.
