Silver salmon, chum salmon, and even that smallmouth bass thats been crashing dragonflies under a hemlock tree on your ‚ trip, the Foam Top Wog Fly will catch them all. The Foam Top Wog Fly was designed by Cory Williams in order to pursue silver salmon in Alaska. Cory wanted a construction that moved in the water, made enough commotion, could be easily seen when covering fast sections, and didnt sink once the body absorbed water, and he achieved this by adding a marabou tail, a spun and clipped deer hair body, and a thick piece of foam over the top. Happy with the build, Cory began fishing this fly and found success almost immediately.
The Foam Top Wog Fly is best fished early in the season whenever salmon and steelhead are most aggressive, but it is also a good pattern for summer steelhead should you encounter them. Fish the Foam Top Wog on a floating line and start by swinging it through the current, then add the occasional strip, plop, and let it settle back into the current, and you will see just how fun it can be to hook a fresh salmon on this style of fly.
