The Film Critic is a fly designed to imitate a variety of emerging Mayflies. When Mayflies shed their nymphal shuck, they go through a period of time when they’re stuck in the ‘film’ struggling to emerge. Trout often capitalize on struggling insects during this stage because they can’t escape. This fly features a shuck and tail, a low-riding body, and a prominent wing to keep the body below the surface and the wing above. This helps both fish and the angler see the fly better when it’s in the water. This fly comes in a few different sizes and a few different colors to imitate a BWO or a PMD emerging from a nymph to a dun. Fish this fly on light tippet during a heavy hatch when trout are not feeding on the duns but are instead eating emerging insects just under the surface of the water.
