Who It’s For

  •  Trout anglers
  • Couples/groups

When To Go

The fishing season at Estancia Mamuil Malal runs from November through April. The runoff period is from November through December, often delivering higher flows and unpressured trout. January through March are the peak summer months and offer medium flows, great wading conditions, and excellent hatches. April brings the autumn season and offers anglers lower flows, cooler temperatures, and fantastic streamer fishing.

Brown Trout

At Mamuil Malal, walk/wade fishing is the most common approach, allowing anglers to take full advantage of the estancia’s private access. With easy access from the lodge, The Rio Malleo features dense populations of wild Brown Trout which can range in size from 10 inches to well over 20 inches. Anglers can target browns here using various techniques, although the Malleo and the Mamuil Malal Spring Creek are known for their phenomenal dry fly fishing.

Rainbow Trout

Despite being known for hefty Brown Trout, the Malleo also offers ample opportunities for catching wild Rainbow Trout. For much of the season, rainbows are often found feeding on nymphs and emergers in quick riffles. Where you find one Rainbow, there are likely others nearby, as ‘bows tend to congregate together. Your expert guides will know the best spots for targeting these beautiful trout, which can range in size from 10 inches up to 20+ inches in some areas.

Equipment

Successful fishing at Estancia Mamuil Malal typically requires multiple rods with matching reels to be prepared for a variety of fishing techniques. We recommend bringing 3 rods: a 9’ 5wt for dry flies, a 9’ 6wt for nymphing, and a 9’ 7wt for streamers. Your guides will help you rig for the day’s fishing. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.
