Straight out of professional competitive angler Lance Egan’s workbook, Egans Frenchie Nymph has a simple design that just plain works. Egans Frenchie was inspired by the simplicity of most competition flies and takes a classic Euro Nymphing approach to design. This nymph’s straightforward construction of a Coq De Leon tail, ribbed Pheasant Tail body, bead head, and hotspot of Ice Dubbing creates a compact look with a purpose-driven approach that was successful enough to land Egan the title of the 2006 World Fly Fishing Championship in Portugal. Although Egans Frenchie isn’t tied to match a specific nymph, it has a general mayfly nymph appearance that can cover most small and medium-sized mayfly species effectively, and it also works equally as well when fished as an attractor or even a cased caddis.
Egans Frenchie Nymph was made to be fished in typical Euro Nymphing fashion under a long rod and leader and bounced off of the bottom, but that doesn’t mean that those who stick to the more classic approach of nymphing with an indicator or high sticking a shorter rod can’t enjoy the benefits of the Frenchie just the same. With a construction that sinks well and an imitative and attractive look, Egans Frenchie is a nymph that can be fished with confidence in riffles and runs and is a fly that we should all carry year-round in a few different sizes.
