Who It’s For
When To Go
June and July mark the peak of Atlantic Salmon fishing in the region, with distinct patterns in the types of fish running during each month. June is dominated by multi-sea-winter Salmon, larger fish that have spent several years at sea and often weigh significantly more. These powerful fish offer anglers thrilling battles and are a highlight of the early season. By July, the rivers see a predominance of Grilse, smaller single-sea-winter Salmon typically weighing 3 to 5 pounds. These fish are plentiful and spirited, providing fast-paced action for anglers. Historically, the prime fishing period falls during the last week of June and the first three weeks of July, offering a mix of both large salmon and lively grilse in peak numbers.
Atlantic Salmon
Atlantic Salmon (Salmo Salar) are prized for their strength, acrobatics, and the challenge they present to anglers. In Newfoundland, these iconic fish return to their natal rivers each summer, offering thrilling opportunities to target them using traditional fly fishing techniques. Known for their power and beauty, Atlantic Salmon are a cornerstone of Newfoundland’s rich angling heritage and an unforgettable target for fly fishers.
Equipment
Successful fishing in coastal Newfoundland only requires a couple of rods and reels. We recommend bringing 2 setups: a 9-10’ 6-8wt for single-hand fishing, and a 10-13’ light spey rod with a scandi style head for two-handed scenarios. Your guide will help you rig appropriately for the day’s fishing. Anglers should come prepared with waders and boots, flies, and terminal tackle. We recommend adhering to the packing and equipment lists provided by Trident.

How should I prepare for a trip to Newfoundland?
Most importantly, you should practice casting, as single-handed and two-handed casting techniques are both employed for Atlantic Salmon fishing, often in windy conditions. Also, purchasing the right gear, tackle, and clothing is important - use our recommended packing lists. Additionally, you should think about your goals for the trip so that you can relay them to your guides. Lastly, figure out your travel logistics well in advance.
How will I fish?
Most angles will swing wet flies and drift dry flies with single handed 6-8wt rods, with some areas more ideal for light spey rods. All fishing will be done while wading and you will move from run to run by vehicle. This fishery is 100% wade fishing.
Where will I fish?
All waters in Newfoundland are public and open to anyone to fish, however non-residents must fish with a licensed guide per local regulations. David Targets six main systems: Harry’s River, Sou’ West Brook, Flat Bay Brook, Fishells River, Robensons River & Crabbs River. These options provide countless pools and runs to fish, potentially targeting new water every session, or a different system each day if you desire.
How long does it take to reach the fishing grounds?
The lodge is within walking distance to several great pools on Harry’s River. From the lodge, it’s about a 20-minute drive to the upper section of Harry’s River or to Sou’ West Brook. Each subsequent River is about a 5-10 minute drive from one another, making for easy pool shifting throughout the day.
How many fish will I catch?
Regulations in Newfoundland dictate a catch-and-release limit of three Salmon released per day. While river and weather conditions can impact angler success, the daily release limit is quite often achieved by most anglers during the prime season.
How physically demanding is this trip?
David Hartlin’s program has a large diversity in the rivers and the conditions you can fish, from slower pools with gravel easy wading to more challenging areas and rivers with faster current and boulders. From big swing water with two handed rods to small pocket fishing with smaller single hand rods, David can tailor your trip to suit your physical requirements and fishing ability.
Where is the lodge?
The lodge is located in Black Duck Siding on The magnificent Harry’s River, 80 miles west of Deer Lake, NL.
Do I need travel insurance?
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. We recommend Travel Guard, a well-established insurance company offering excellent, affordable policies for angling travel.

Every situation is different when medical and security emergencies happen. To ensure you’re protected when things don’t go as planned, we highly recommend our clients enroll with Global Rescue.
What is the weather like?
