Created by the famous Dave Whitlock in the mid-1950s, Daves Hopper remains one of the top producing grasshopper imitations of today. When Dave set out to create a hopper imitation, he was looking for something that would float well, sit low in the water, and would land on the surface with a “splat” that imitates the real thing. Taking inspiration from Joe’s Hopper and the Muddler Minnow, Dave designed his fly with a spun deer hair head, knotted pheasant tail legs, a hackled body, and poly yarn body that all come together to give buoyancy, a realistic profile, and the “splat” that Dave was seeking.
A great grasshopper imitation, Daves Hopper can be fished any time in the summer and until the first real frost hits and the hoppers disappear. This fly is a great choice to fish on windy days, under trees, or in a meadow stream where grasshoppers are prevalent, and popular sizes are 8-12. Let it dead drift, add a twitch, or use it as your top fly in the “Hopper Dropper” nymph rig, Daves Hopper is the perfect addition to your summer arsenal.
